Accuracy of Recessed Muzzle Crown

Does a recessed crown effect accuracy adversely? I have a tendency, as an alternative to cutting the usual inch off the end of a barrel, to leave that inch and just recess the crown in an inch with as big a bore as reasonable. Is this a good rifle building practice?

You may as well just cut it off with a hacksaw as many believe a parting tool crushes the barrel slightly. It is ok to have a recessed crown but dont see why it is easier doing it your way. Having a deep recess only makes it harder to work with in my opinion.

I usually go around 1/2" to 3/4" deep, though I think I have had some closer to 1". The recessed crown was more to keep rain drops out of the muzzle for F class guns and for when rain blows in from the front under the 1000yd BR shelter. I have not noticed any accuracy problems, though I have not tried any before and after tests. Tuners often hang over the front, so I don't see that having something concentric after the muzzle hurts things too bad.

The crown is normally done in the tight spot of the barrel. Most good gun smiths are very critical of the crown. The one I uses dials the barrel in just like he is chambering it. Larry

A hacksaw creating enough heat to distort is ridiculous at best. After I saw a chunk off for what ever reason you can handle it right away as the barrel acts like a heatsink. If you have actual data then please share it.A parting tool can and will restrict a bore, however by turning enough off it will probably get rid of it quickly enough.I will stick to a hacksaw or a bandsaw as you suggest.Maybe I am nuts but that is what I was told by one of the nations top benchrest gunsmiths. And no I will not bring up his name as I don't like putting him in the middle of a debate he didn't start.

How much crack would a guy have to smoke to run a hacksaw fast enough to get the muzzle end of say a .750 OD barrel blank hot enough to cause issues? Getting late here and I am too lazy to think it through as to at what point your 416 stainless is too hot! Me thinks one would really haveta be 'gettin after it' to cause excessive heat on anything over maybe cigarette size in OD??????

Everyone says 'weed' makes you mellow so if you were 'weed stoned' could you actually be so slow as to cryo a blank? Things to ponder, hmmmmmmm.
