accuracy loads for .300 win mag

Hello all, going to load up some test loads for a friend. 180 grain Sierra matchkings, either Accurate 4064, 4895, or H4831SC, (what I have, maybe not the best but it's a start...) Any suggestions would be appreciated and will be checked against published. Thanks, Jim

The .300 Win Mag is a bitch to load for. As said above H4831sc is what I would use and you can probably find a decent load with that bullet and powder combo. That being said, I bet I have tuned up a 100 or more 300s over the years and each and everyone has a mind of it's own on what it likes to shoot best. Unlike other calibers that seem to run really well with a certain powder and bullet weight almost every time the .300 proves to be frustrating almost every time. One will like a 210 and H1000 and the next will hate it and want a 185 with H4831. Next one won't shoot anything over 168gr bullet worth a damn and so on. Getting one to shoot MOA can be done relatively easily, but finding that magical load that shoots under half MOA is tricky in my experience. Your mileage may vary.

Minimal experience but 4831 SC is the best of your powders listed. I found a load with Berger 190 and H1000 but as Stomp said, I isn’t like other rounds I load for.

I have had good results with H4350 and H1000 loading 180gr Nosler Partitions, Accubonds and Hornady interlocks. Tricky to load for ( for me at least) as my best results have come with hotter loads than I like.

I have had good luck in several 300 WM with RL22, H-1000, and Ramshot magnum. 10 twists, 190, 210,and 215 grain Bergers on top of a CCI 250 or Fed 215. Also loaded the 180 partition years ago like @boltfluter but don't remember which powder I was using. GREAT cartridge!

Leave the 4064 and 4895 on the shelf. You should be able to find a suitable load with 4831sc. I haven't loaded the 300wm for many years but R22 and 7828ssc worked well for me. There is a ton of info available for the 300wm with 4831sc if you look around including free data from Hodgdon, Nosler and Sierra.

You might do well to consider this as an initial test:

Gold Medal Sierra MatchKing, 300 Win Mag, 190 Grain, Sierra Matchking Boat-Tail Hollow Point, 2900 fps

This is the load I use currently when reloading. VVN-165 for a cooler burning load, Re-25 for lower pressure.

Yes it is 190 grain like the military uses. They also have a 220 grain MK load.

I've ordered from these folks a few times with positive results. It's less expensive to start with these than reloading/testing at the current prices.

Hello all, I appreciate all the input so far. I figured cannon fodder was better served by slow powders, I mainly was going with what I have myself. I will start with some 4831 loads, and I think I might try some 4350 also, unless some H1000 comes my way. Kurz, thanks for the link to that website, unfortunately I reside in the Peoples Republik and it is such a hassle to buy ammo, (+11% on top...) that reloading is the only way for me. Jim

I haven't loaded any of the powders that you listed. However, I have been loading 180s with H1000 for years. That combo produces excellent accuracy and velocity. 4350 has produced great accuracy and speed with a 150 class bullet. I have read that H4831sc performs well but I have no personal experience.
