Accuracy at 5x vs 22x and 100 yds

I seem to shoot better groups at 100 yds when using only 5x power on the scope vs max at 22x. Is it just me and my technique? Do I need to change something when shooting at 22x that is messing me up?

Aim small, miss small is what folks say...

Make sure you haven't got a parallax issue.

Parallex is parallex..weather at 5x or 22x. If you have a parallex poblem (out of adjustment) at 22x, the parallex issue is still there at 5x, it just isn't as obvious at 5x.

Maybe you have a head problem........yours! ;D At 22power, you see every movement, heartbeat, twitch, etc. and you're trying really, really hard...too hard maybe, to make a perfect shot. At 5 power you don't see all that movement so you have more confidence, you concentrate on the sight picture and let the shot break.

Why the high magnification? Benchrest, long distance varmint shooting, etc??? Manufacturers have brainwashed so many people into believing they need high magnification and large objective lenses. Don't get me wrong, there are legit reasons, but many folks don't need it.

Fundamental marksmanship. Sight picture, breathing control, trigger squeeze. Its like a good glass of whiskey... It cures many ails.

+1 to above. It is no doubt in my mind this is exactly what happens. Even a small breeze at higher magnification appears to move your reticle and trying to concentrate hard it seems you are chasing the perfect "overlap" of crosshairs and bulls eye.

Another problem with your 22 x setting is with seeing more movement is that you will tighten your grip on the rifle in an attempt to stop the movement and sometimes that is hard to duplicate shot after shot

Im a sucker for high magnification myself. Its nice to have it and not need it then not have it and need it. Even if just to identify a possible target you otherwise couldnt then shoot at a lower setting. lower magnification is a lot less strain on your eyes. Which aids in more accurate shooting. Comfort is repeatable. Repeatable is accurate. Everything adds up. Pick your poison.
