Accubond vs SST's ?

270 WSM in Rem model 7. What have you guys that have tried both, find to be the most accurate?

My model 7 is a copper mine even after Tubbs Final Finish. I have tried Sierra GameKings, 130, 140, 150 Hornady SST's and about every powder. About the best I can get is 1.25-1.5 accuracy on a good day. Have not tried any Nosler stuff yet.

I would be happy if I could get 1 to 1.25 accuracy on a normal basis. Rifle has been pilarbedded/glass bedded, good trigger, good rings and scope. Factory loads are 1.5-2" :o :o

Just wondering if anyone has had a rifle that REALLY liked one bullet over any others? I have always been a Hornady and Sierra user but maybe this thing will like Nosler??

130-140gr SSTs w/H 4831 fed 215GMs ,150 Nos BTs VV N165 fed 215GMs. This is a restocked Fac. Rem sps.

the most accurate load i shot in my 270wsm were 140 accubonds. im not a fan of ballistic tips when used on deer so i loaded and hunted with the 130 sst's. accuracy wasnt quite as good as the noslers but plenty good enough (well under 2" at 150 yards). have shot 2 bucks with the sst's, both quartering towards me, both between 175-200 yards from a good rest. first one (in '08) had to have a finishing off shot, second one ('09) i lost. he ran 250 yards and got in the woods, i backed off and went back 3 hours later. tracked dried blood off and on for 75 yards then the blood turned fresh. backed out again went in 2 days later and combed the 8 acre woods and never did find him. for anything but a broadside lung shot they are way too soft for me. hit meat or bone and they just dont penetrate. the barnes triple shock "x" bullet is the only bullet for me and deer from now on!!! they were always accurate and deadly in my old 7mm/08. didnt matter whether shoulder or lung shot it was GAME OVER!!! never got around to loading them for my 270wsm. >:(

I went to the range today with my new Sako A7 in 270 WSM and with both Sierra Gamekings AND SST's got 3/4" groups!!

Should have bought the Sako first... Funny thing is, the most accurate load in the Model 7 is also the most accurate in the Sako A7.....Just a lot smaller ;)

Accuracy should be equal regarding Accubombs and SST's, yet these bullets don't react equally afield. Bonded-Fare drills through with DEEP penetration, whilst SST's EXPAND fast. Deer don't require extreme penetration, but succumb to hydrostatic shock quickly. Love the concept of 90% weight retention, yet Nosler Partitions paved the way for deadly impact. Is there a specific purpose for each type of bullet? I'd have to answer: YES . . . Cliffy

"My model 7 is a copper mine even after Tubbs Final Finish."

Broncman - I had a 7mm Rem mag/Sendero that although it was very accurate, always fouled badly. Even after the Tubbs bullet treatment, I could never go very many shots before accuracy would deteriorate. Clean bore, it was good to go. Twenty shots later... Accuracy was going downhill and the barrel needed a thorough cleaning.

I'd say you've got a great reason to treat yourself to a hand-lapped Krieger barrel! ;D

Fouling is almost non-existent with the Kriegers I've used...

Regards, Guy

Tried the Accubonds today in the 270 WSM and the 7-08. Bothe Sako A7's.

The 270 WSM will shoot Gamekings, SST, and Accubonds nearly to the same point of aim all with nice triangle shaped 3/4" groups.

The 7-08 is having trouble with fliers. Both SST's and Accubonds will get 2 touching and another about an inch off. The throat appears to be pretty long. Will play with seating depths some more. Could be my death grip on the 7-08 after shooting the Short Mag ::)

My rifle is a Win Mod 70 actoin with a Maddco barrel and Wilddog stock,.270 WSM.I first started using Win Supreame factory ammo in 130 grain ballistic silver tips,as in photo below. As you can see they shoot well, so i reload the same bullet,Combined Technolegy 130 grain ballistic silver tip with 61 grains of W760 at the same seating depth as factory ones.

broncman, I shoot both bullets and have found the SST's to be more accurate in every rifle I have tried them in. They perform well on thin skinned game (coyote and deer) and acceptable on pigs. The Accubonds are a tougher bullet with slightly more penetration, but also twice as expensive. If I were hunting bear or big elk, I would prefer the Accubond.

Re: Accubond vs SST's?

Nosler Accubond and Hornady Interbond are similar in cost and composition. They are both tipped and bonded.

SST is little more than a tipped Interlock. It's not bonded.

The SST is tougher than a Ballistic Tip. The cannelure seems to do quite well holding the jacket on. With similar loads in 270 Win and 7mm Mag, the Ballistic Tip was a little more accurate than the SST.

I've loaded 5 bullets for the 8x57, Hornady 125gr SP and HP, Sierra 150gr Pro Hunter, 200gr Accubond, and the 200gr Sierra MK. The Accubond was seconded in accuracy by the 150gr Pro Hunter.

NOS .284 / 7MM 140 GR SPT ACCUBOND (50) $23.58

.284 7MM 139 GR SST (100) $25.04

Accubond is per 50, or almost $.50 each.
SST is per 100 or $.2504 each.

This is from Powder Valley.

Doubt not that LEAD core fare is on its way out. State Parks, Commufornia, etc., will continue to this tree-hugger, non-sensical concept. I'm currently working with E-Tips, TSX, GMX, etc., and discovering usable performance. The days of the Nosler Partition, the best of the best, are waining swiftly, so get used to the "new" America where sheer hunting performance takes a rear-seat to etiquette afield regarding brute force succumbs to whatever quality of kills. Aim at 100 yard sure kills soon. Cliffy

Love bonded bullets, though not ALWAYS available in my favorite, extremely popular, caliber with a grain weight I would desire. Bonded bullets have proven their worth, at a time when they may become outlawed. Shucks, isn't that generally the way? I've gone passed them to LEAD-FREE stuff, in order to make my experimenting continually viable to the vast majority of modern hunters. Cliffy

Do you "test" your bullets on anything besides bowling pins? Why don't you let us know how your magic ammo works on praire dogs or hogs?

My experience with factory barrels that don't shoot at first is to load flat base bullets. I usually start with Sierras. I have a modle 7 in 7-08 that will not shoot boatails but flat base about 1" for 3 shots. I also had a 700 in 270win that only shot flat based bullets.

Hi John, bowling pins don't scream when hit off-center by 600 yard semi-specialists. I really don't want to shoot PDogs with a .243 Winchester. I've culled a few in Wyoming with a .177 RWS Diana Model 350 Magnum using Beeman Trophy pellets. This is a truly potent pellet rifle worth looking at for this type of game. Accubond is STILL not available in .243 caliber. Cliffy

So what I'm getting is that you have never killed a hog and the only praire dogs you have shot were a couple with a pellet gun. We now see what an expert you are.

I have a VSSF II in 22-250 that won't shoot Hornady's at all. I was working up loads after I bought it and I trickled every charge to the exact weight and shot off a Leadsled DFT. The best group from the Hornady's was about 1.5" while the Nosler BT shot about .5" and the Bergers and Sierra's shot at .25. The Hornady and Noslers were 50 gr Varmit Bullets while the Berger's and Sierra's were 52 gr Match Bullets.

John, I only report what I have done downrange. I never lie nor do I over-hype as to what I have found. I don't merely repeat what Reloading Manuals claim in print. I merely experiment and report real results. I love to shoot and if a game animal was standing firmly against every shot, I'd be in Wonderland alongside Alice. I feel fortunate to have located a 300 yard shooting range I can use as often as I'm able. I hope you can learn from what I've learned, but if not . . . Luv Cliffy
