ABM Ammo & new F-TR shooter

I thought I would share this story:

I have a friend that wanted to try shooting F-Class, F-TR specifically. Over the past few months, I helped him set up a new rifle in .308, based on a Defiance action. He was absolutely NOT ready to start handloading yet, although he has interest. So, we decided to use one of the US FTR reamer designs (the 2013 I believe) and I told him to invest in some ABM ammo loaded with Berger 185 grain Juggernauts. I figured that, at best, he'd put up a some X's and get interested in the sport, but that he'd be missing out on some accuracy by not handloading and doing some load development.

I took him out to his first match with the rifle this past Saturday, at 500 yards. Rainy, but conditions were absolutely perfect in terms of wind. He'd put exactly one box through the rifle.

He promptly put up a 600-34X, missing out on the overall win by 3X's to an Open shooter.

I guess that ABM ammo is pretty good stuff... ;)

A superb story. Factory ammo is too lightly dismissed as not fit for purpose. I guess the challenge for your friend is to do better next time out and improve his 'X' count. Well done by both of you.

Merry Christmas.

That and I told him that sometimes there is wind... :-) So savor this while you can.

I was there and witnessed the 600-34x with ABM ammo. It was by far the calmest "wind" I have ever shot in, but that really doesn't detract from the great job the shooter did, and the capability of ABM ammo.

I was there too. The wind for the 6mm's (105 VLD @ 2850) was almost the width of the X ring at times. Yes, the range there is sheltered and it was the easiest I've seen.

Thank you for the positive feedback. I have forwarded this on to the rest of the team, and they liked seeing positive feedback! Thank you kindly.

I've been impressed so far albeit limited exposure. My buddy was wanting a light stalking rifle. I talked him into a T3 lite in 308. We put a 1-6 Vortex with the JM-1 on it. Bought some ABM 168 hunters and it was shooting a little under .75" at 100. Shot a 3 shot group at 500yd right at 3" with about an inch of vertical. All this off a Harris bipod and using the holdovers in the scope. Not a bad combo at all.
