Abbreviations

Would someone please post what all the abbreviated post are. Example SPF is sold pending funds. Everyone does!nt know all the different ones. Thank you

Took me a while to figure out 'SPF' also! If we are only occasional online forum shoppers it can be confusing. I thought at first it had something to do with the newish SPF 6.8mm bullet or even a sun bloke ingredient! <g>

There is a link somewhere for those abbreviations, but I cannot find it right now. Unfortunately each area of 'interest' such as shooting, RVing, flying, hiking, etc seems to develop its own list. Here are a few that you might already know off the top of my head:

OAL - Overal length
LTO - Length to ogive
SP - Soft,or sometimes 'spire') point
DW - Dear wife

Here's one that doesn't get used enough:
IMHO - In my humble opinion. <g>

Agreed on this..not always easy for someone not having english,or american) as mother's language.

Also believe I.M.H.O can lead to interpretation as 'In My,not that) Humble Oinion

R.G.C

Acronyms Suck! Spell it out! Tired of Acronyms! Hornaday recently had a publication released with 'Past Bullets' in the TITLE! I believe they meant 'Passed Bullets' No, not an Acronym, but LEARN to use proper wordage before publishing something. Sorry, just my insane English teachings at college level. Color me extinct, but still actually around at 67. cliffy

'.....but LEARN to use proper wordage before publishing something...'

Oh, don't get me started! Poor English and grammar is one of my pet peeves, and I drive my wife nuts when we watch TV! The History Channel is one of the worst; the narrator they use most of the time uses grammar that grates on my nerves! Getting old and crotchety is rough, eh? <g>

However, in my opinion there is value in using abbreviations, but only if we all understand what they mean. Some of us forget that not everyone on forums has the same background, or uses the same tools, or is even of a similar culture, etc. Is we would define our often-used abbreviations in our posts that would help, and I try to do that.

Let's face it, the population as a whole is getting more ignorant every year, at least in the minds of the media. When is the last time the wind was correctly reported in knots, or words over 2 syllables long were used? If we are competent enough to understand the two or three pronunciations of 'Caribbean' surely we can figure out the meaning of '80 knots'? Ha! <g>

One example that really bugs me, from one of the 'talking heads' on what passes for 'news' these days is: 'The truck drove thru the stop sign and struck the car'. Says something about college educations these days. Maybe they spend too much time on 'political correctness'.

PCS: (Political Correctness Sucks). Acronymns have gotten out of control. After using an ACRONYMN, please spell-out the meaning to assist us all in understanding. USA can mean United Soviet America, or Usa, Japan. Now-a-days, no one can take anything for granted. PETA means "People Eating Tasty Animals." HESAS is spelled-out as "High Energy Suet All-Season" so who'd have guessed THAT regarding bird suet cake (BSC). ??? Cliffy

OK, may I join in? "Fact of the matter is": everybody is using it. What the hell does that mean?

Talking about America getting stupid, well I won't go there. Here it is 5:43 in the morning and already I am angry.

I will agree also that acronymns can cause some trouble.but the thing is we cannot change ones way of saying what they have to say.heck fo me I have to keep my little friend Webster on hand.but hey thats me.even have to think sometmes about what I want to say so that I am able to put it the best way I can.and we all so have to remember that not all of use had to write term pappers all the time while iin college.it doesn't mean that we have to all have a college education to post on this site.its just the idea of a person wanting to ask a question or wanting to give their answer/opinion.and for me if I don't like a post or hate that someone has posted a bad reply I just move on.I try to remember what it was like to be talked down on all the time when I was little.so that I want judge someone in the future.hey God doesn't judge so who am I to jugde someone.so I don't.so for me I'll pass on some wisdom.if you are haveing a problem with things just move on and go to another post.just like the fourm boss said we don't need to take a wounderful site like 6mmbr is and waste it down the drain.sorry for such a long post but had to reply to this one.been a victim on another site and it really made me made.even tried to stand up for another gent one time and made a friend at the end.so don't hate me for my two cents worth.if so just move on.i thank this site for what they stand for and for the guys who are members.you guys have helped me out a lot and hope that some day I can return the favor.just remember this is JMHO. John

I sincerely plan to never post an UNCLEAR statement. Acronymns mean whatever one wishes them to mean! The rest of us are usually left out in the cold. This serves no one! Cliffy, the often confused

I also agree that there are differing standards for abbreviations used on forums. My pet peeve is the acronyms used on the wanted to sell/buy sections of our different forums, such as SPF or bump, you get my drift...
Each section has its own referee, and I'm not talking hockey here. The refs should post a 'sticky' to explain what is required, what is acceptable and, of course, what is not.
