Àa6.5-06 Results, Thoughts.

.
Guys I did A little bit of shooting today with my 6.5-06. I’m using Hornady 147s and have done a little work with IMR 4350 and now some H4831sc. I’m seating the hornady 147 eldm 9 thousandths off the lands.. Fed 210m primers. 270 Win brass weighed, prepped, and sorted. Barrel is a Remage Criterion, 26”, varmint/Sendero profile.
50.5 imr 4350 shot .5moa clover leaf at 100. Velocity was around 2890 which is pretty good for the 147s. Recoil is mild. I went up to 50.8 and the group opened a little. This was however with fouling loads after giving the barrel a good cleaning. Oryx chassis, Mack Brothers action which I’ll have to say I’m pretty impressed with. Very smooth. Trigger Tech two stage trigger. I just like two stages. I have them in all of my ARs and hate switching back and forth. 1st stage 1.25, 2nd just over 1 Lb.
i then started my work up with H4831sc. Seating depth and everything remained same except for powder. Round count after today is 25 so she’s nowhere near broken in. I’m in South Carolina at an altitude of 30’. Temps range from 25 on rare occasions to right around 100f. We have some serious humidity as I live on a river not far from the coast. I’ll just give you some highlights.
H4831sc 51 grains. .75”clover leaf 2750
51.6. .52”clover leaf. Right around 2800.
52.6. .50“ Clover leaf shape. 2849. Still no pressure signs, primers are nice and round, bolt lift is smooth. I only got one velocity for this 3 shot group.
53.3. Two bullets in the same hole with a called pull on the 3rd about 3/4” high. I’m just above 2900fps here. Primers are still round, I don’t feel any difference in bolt lift, no ejector marks, maybe the smallest indication of ring just below the head of the case.
I definitely would like to try a few more at the 53.3 mark and look for pressure. Case web expansion is pretty much the same for all bullets fired from 51 to 53.3. Perhaps a couple ticks more at 53.3.
I also like the 52.6 node. This one gives me some flexibility. I know I need to work with seating dept now and see if that will help tighten the groups more. Interestingly enough with h4831sc I’m not seeing any point of impact shifts as charge weights increase. Group size grows or shrinks but group center remains almost unchanged. I know that’s a good thing. My 26” varmint in 308 has quite a bit of poi shift between nodes.
Now the Questions. None of these loads were very consistent across the chronograph. But it’s early with very few rounds down the tube. My best. Sd of 12-15 with es of 25 or more. I’m pretty new to chronographs. But that ain’t gonna get it done. The Imr 4350 load showed the better statistics so far and the best speeds. Is IMR 4350 so much more temp sensitive that I would be better off focusing on the H4831sc? Is the temp sensitivity just more Marketing Hype? I’ve shot a lot of 4350 in 270 but I never really shot over 400 yards with it. I’d like to do 1000 plus with this rifle. I’ve been doing 1000 with my 308 for a while. No competition, just targets and long range depredation so I need a bullet that kills at longer ranges. The old Amax was my favorite. The eldm’s are showing goodeldm promise.
Should I try a primer change To see if numbers get better? I have more Federals than anything else and prefer them. I have no magnum primers in any brand. I do have Winchester LR primers and some CCIs.
Can a change in seating depth help lower es and sd numbers?
I also plan on testing some 140eldms. I just liked the idea of the 147s and the .696 BC but the 140 isn’t far behind at .646. I thought about Bergers but I have seen them pencil through first hand on long range shots. Not a lot, but enough to make me worry. Thanks guys, let me know what you think.

In my experience with the 6.5-06 a change in seating depth or a primer change will affect your numbers, including accuracy. A couple of 3 shot groups of each should give you a glimpse of whether it's a good or bad result.

Is the temperature sensitivity real you ask, yes it's real.

Lastly N560 has performed very well in my 6.5-06 with 140gr Seirra gamekings. JME. WD

Good information, thank you. I plan to run a series of seating depth tests changing .0025 per load. May try a primer switch as well. Changing one variable at a time. Never shot any of the V powder.
