A Wildcat cartidge I'm thinking of trying?

Hey all! I was thinking about trying this 6mm wildcat my smith has a reamer for. This wildcat is somewhere between a 6XC and a 6mm-22-250 A.I. Obviously based on the 22-250 Rem. cartridge. Dies are not a problem cause he said he can make those for me. Just was wondering what you folks thought. I think it would probably be a pretty good shooter. Just gonna use it for varmints. I think it will probably offer more barrel life than a .243 Win or 6mm Rem. What do you folks think?

Thanks for the reply Mike! However, I don't see where a 6XC would be any cheeper or easier than this particular wildcat. I would have to buy dies either way. As far as brass goes the only place I "know of" to get 6XC brass is from Tubb and I would imagine they're pretty proud of it so I would end up fireforming brass either way. With that being said, there would be comparable work and money spent either avenue. Thanks for your concern though!

How about the 6 BR? You cannot beat the practicality of the 6BR for what you intend to use it for. All the info you will ever need is on this website.
Wildcat chamberings can be problematic and expensive for so little gain.
If the Smith provides you with a sizing die that works well, you may end up pleased.......if not you're in for a nightmare.

If you're gonna wildcat the 6XC cartridge, you don't need custom 6XC brass. That started as a wildcat based off the 22-250 cartridge, of which there's several brands available.

Best - hopefully - yet will be the new product Lapua is slated to release soon:

http://accurateshooter.wordpress.com/2009/12/05/big-news-lapua-will-offer-22-250-brass-in-2010/

- but in the mean time you got Winchester, Remington, Norma, Graf's, Lapua's 6.5x47 for the time being... plenty of good stuff out there.

Why? The reason most wildcats were developed was to improve performance, barrel life or take advantage of a cheap source of bullets or brass.

CanusLatransSnpr,

This sounds very close the a round Dave Tooley came with 6 x 44, (your case will be a little bigger). It set many records at 600 yd benchrest. It should be a great round.

I use a 6BR and 6BRX for varmint now. The 6BR runs a 70 gr Blitzking at 3500 f/s, the BRX gets 3700 f/s. I have many one shot kills past 500 yds. You can't touch the accuracy of the 6BR and IMP class rounds. I am thinking of a 6 x 47 Lapua

Thanks everybody for your input! Mark, I would like to try a 6 X 47 but not Lapua. I want to try the old 6 X 47 Imp. based on the .222 Rem. Mag cartridge. An old friend of mine, who has since passed away, shot that one in bench rest for many years!

Mike,

If you do not have a 6BR, you need to try one, you will be hooked. I miss a 6x47 Cooper a few years back, I wish I had got it, did not have the money when it for sale.

Sounds like the old "6mm International" that our military was experimenting with in the 1970's. Put that in a search engine so you don't have to reinvent the wheel. http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=222219

Being an old wildcatter myself I certainly don't want to discourage you from trying out something new, but a 6mm based on the 308 case head is not one of them. There have been 6mm wildcats at every millimeter length from 30 to 50, at every shoulder angle from 20 to 45, large primer, small primer, lots of taper, no taper. So you won't be hurting for lack of loading data.

With all of the good brass available for the 6BR, 6x47, 6XC, and 243, I sure wouldn't go back to making my own.

But, that just my own opinion.

Good Luck with your project.

German, thanks for the heads up on the 6XC dies but, they won't work for this particular cartridge! If I'm not mistaken the 6XC has a 30 degree shoulder and this one has a 35 degree shoulder! Once again though, thanks for the heads up.

Ray, I hear ya on all the working of the brass! Its something I have wanted to try and if for nothing more than to say I did it! I have fun reloading but, not as much fun as I have shooting! What would really make shooting enjoyable would be to find someone to clean my barrels up when I'm done shooting! ;) Thanks for your thoughts!
