A true .244 - 1-12" twist 26 inch. Hart

Hello,
Some years ago, I thought I had purchased the ultimate in varmint rifles; A Model 70 single shot action, an unfired (?) Hart 1-12 inch barrel in .244, .750 at the muzzle, chambered with a tight neck; in a McMillan HBR stock. On paper it looked perfect. It wasn't. After a long time experimenting, I gave up and turned it over to Charley Robertson of Score HI gunsmithing in Albuquerque. His report on the quality of the gunsmithing of this weapon cannot be repeated on this site. In essence this weapon was assembled to be sold to some sucker, not shot! Charley performed a lot of work on the weapon, the most important was setting back the barrel and rechambering and crowning PROPERLY.
I have taken it to the range just once and it would appear the limitation on this weapon with a NightForce atop it, is ME. With a trip coming up to Whittington, I shall be working on reloading for several weapons but really want to develop the proper loads for this true varmint rifle. I already know this barrel doesn't like anything heavier than 80 grains. I have a multitude of light 6mm bullets and if anyone on this site had experience with this caliber with these specs, I would appreciate your experience.

Thank you in advance,

WW

The 244 Rem is the 12" twist version of the renamed newer 6mm Remington.

IMR 4350 should work great in this cartridge.

Bullets: 80 Sierra Blitz is the one I'm familiar with in this caliber which shoots extremely well with IMR 4350 and is an idea varmint bullet. I used it many years ago in the 243 Win for varmint hunting.

I never owned a rifle in this caliber but a fellow varmint hunter I knew many years ago shot this cartridge and did quite well with it with the aforementioned combo. Truly a long-range varmint excellent option.

Think of it as nothing more than a necked down 7mm Mauser, that kinda strips the mystery away.

If you want that thing to really shoot, get some Barts 80 grn BT’s. Push them hard.

I too have one of these, but mine is a remington mdl 722 in 244 cal. It has been restored back to period correct condition and sport a 12x scope. And it shoots great, whenever I shoot it. round count is unknown.
You might try the load mine likes. Happy shooting.
75gr vmax
39.6grs RL15
fed 210M
R.P cases full-length sized and annealed
coal: 2.785"
This combo shoots .50" and under @ 100yds

I shoot mine with 68gr benchrest bullets leftover from matches. I shoot imr 4895, 4350 and 4831. Its very forgiving and has been hell on varmints for many years. It started as a 722 in 244 now its fully blueprinted and single shot, stainless 12tw barrel chambered in the actual 244 specs, a custom painted modified mcmillan silhouette stock, and a 6.5-20 leupold. Its one of my go to varmint rifles especially if i wont have a rest and dont expect any follow up shots.

I have a .244 with a Shilen 12 twist for the last 35 years I have used predominantly the Sierra 85 gr HP. Deadly on Antelope.

This is my go-to bullet for the 243 Win for all applications. Been using it for over 30+.

It works quite well on eastern white tail also with proper shot placement. Of course, proper shot placement should be observed no matter which bullet / cartridge you use.

For strictly varmint hunting, I used the 70 grain Sierra blitz kings, 75 grain Vmaxs, and 70 grain ballistic tips. Accurate and explosive out of my 12 twist.
VV160 worked really well and was very clean burning. Also used IMR 4350 with good accuracy.
