a ruger M77, Mark II in 6 ppc?

An interesting rifle. A friend showed me this rifle...did not know ruger made such. Could not find a lot about this chambering. Were these any good for competition? Doubt it. We're they any good as varmint rigs? Borescoped it and bore is pristine. Read they were hammer forged. Value? Thanks.

Cabela's has one listed in their Gun Library for $769.00.

Ruger produced them in limited numbers.

Had one and recently sold it only because I had a number of custom PPCs. Accuracy of my rifle exceeded my expectations. With no modifications to the rifle, one hundred yard 5 shot groups averaged in the low 0.4's. My chamber had a .270 nk and was no-turn if using Norma 6PPC brass which has a loaded neck diameter of approx .266. The barrel twist rate was 1 in 12". Never confirmed by Ruger but my understanding is that Ruger used Douglas barrels for these rifles. My barrel was smoother and cleaned up easier than other factory barrels I have had over the years. Barrel was not lapped and had six grooves. The 2-stage target trigger had a 1lb 12oz pull. Bottom line, one of the more accurate "out of the box" factory rifles I have owned.

PS: My rifle was in excellent condition and sold for $825(shipping not included).

I've had one since 2001. I use it entirely for competition Varmint matches. Not bragging, but I've won my share of them, and have quite a few pieces of wood and certificates to prove it. Also, about 8 years ago, I bought a Ruger 22ppc that was hands down the most accurate factory rifle I've ever known. I sold it to a collector so that it was off the market for competitions. (Also tough to see bullet holes if you need to at 400yds.) My brother has one (6ppc Ruger) that is a good competitor too. I've found that the Riflebasix triggers for them, and finding the right bullet, powder, primer, neck tension, and cases will help you to cut the groups down to .200 or better pretty consistently.

Do ALL of them shoot that well? Pretty much so if one knows how to tune in the loads, torque the stock screws correctly, and not torque the forearm while shooting. I've seen 3 or 4 that didn't display much in the way of accuracy, but I'm not sure that that wasn't due somewhat to operator error. (Some people can mess up an anvil). ;)

The biggest drawback to it that I've encountered over the years is that some clubs or shoots do not allow 6ppc or 6br's as "factory" rifles in their factory class. ;) WD
