A rest question

A newbie here. I am putting things together to start competing in UBR at a local club. There is a Caudwell fire control rest in the classifieds. Would this work for a starter rest or would it be waste of money?
Thanks
Tom

Tom,

My buddy shoots F-Class off the rest you are asking about. It works OK, but F-Class isn't no when never the same game as you are talking about playing. I'd recommend going ahead and spending the money and buy a good, solid rest to start with. It will save you a lot of time and troubles from the get go. You can pick up any number of good used rest here in the classified if you'll keep any eye open...ie..Farley, JJ, SEB, Randolph, etc. Just my 2 cents worth..

I used one for a little while. It worked fine at first but quickly developed roughness in the friction plate that holds the rest top in position. The rest was replaced under warranty and I sold the replacement without even opening the box. For your money, Butch Lambert makes a coaxial rest top that will fit most inexpensive rests. That top works very smoothly and stands up over time.

+1 for Butch Lamberts Shadetree Rest. Unless they were redesigned, the Caldwell coax internals are made of pot metal and will give problems in short order. IMHO not suitable for the rigors and demands of Registered Competition.

I don't believe that there is any way to get a good rest cheap. You'll normally get what you pay for and it will reflect in your scores. Some shooters are able to shoot good scores off of cheap rests but they are 1 in a 1,000.

Hart rests are pretty solid and you could upgrade later and put a windage top or a joystick..

Tom, Ray is a 100% right i won a lot of matches with one like that but did have a windage top and a speed screw. Spend money on barrels not on a fancy rest ……… I still don't have a fancy one ,but it works ……. jim O'Hara
