I was watching the Military channel last night and they did a story on the,CheyTac .408 sniper system) Do a search on this and see what I am talking about. This rifle shoots a 419 grain bullet a little over 2900 fps and is very very accurate out to 2500 yards. I want one. Maybe when my rich uncle gets out of the poor house he will float me a loan.

I was lucky enough to put a few rounds through one at a mere 500 yards a couple of years ago. Wow... Watching the trace while the owner was shooting it was like watching the air get ripped open... Amazing. I shot three times at a 3" Shoot n See target at 500 yards. As I recall I hit it solidly twice and barely missed or just nicked it with one shot. Amazing rifle, but the price of both the rifle and the ammo kept it out of the realm of possibility for me.
Also wasn't sure what the heck I was going to do with it... but it sure was fun!
This was one of the "Windrunner" rifles as I recall. Big Son of a Gun!

It was a good idea but thats as far as the desginers though it out. the military is never gonna adopt a gun that uses ammo that can't be had anywhere. The companies that were making the decient cases for the 408 coulden't keep up with the civilian market and it was tiny compairing to everything else.
The gun called for a special barrel that only one or two makers were putting out and they only shot the lathe turned bullets that well.
As for it performance, yes it was pretty cool but with better brass and better bullets the 50 BMG would make it look bad.
Also some guys have taken that 408 case, necked it down to .338 and improved it they are shooting a 300gr Sierra Match King at 3500fps !!! with other custom bullets in the 325gr class the BC is pushing .950 and that with a velocity of 3300fps makes for a simply amazing round, Kirby Allen has made hits on rockchucks in excess of 3000yds with this caliber!!
