a-max for hunting?

is a-max all right for hunting? the manufactorer says only small game but i read otherwise on forum. i'm going to be shooting 162 grain a-max from my 7mm mag. they'll only kill ground hogs? just wondering.

Well there's a ton of arguments, your gonna get a 50/50 mix.

Used a 140 Vmax out of a 7-08, the boy connected with a whitetail at 300, it exploded on the shoulder. Long story short it died, but not till they jumped it and shot it a second time.
Frangable bullets are designed to explode/fragment not penetrate. Thus small game.
I'm loading him with Barnes 120 TTSX for next season. I'm going to try Accubonds.

With the vast selections of bullets available now-a-days, might as well use'm for what their ment for. ;)

Well, the VMax is more fragile than the AMax. They use the Amax for hunting with great success. Here's a thread with that discussion.

Hope that helps.

the 162A-max is a fantastic hunting bullet,my friends hammer whitetails with them coming out of a 7mm Rem mag DRT! Plus 650yd and 850yd shots on antelope that i witnessed. It tears up groundhogs too.
awesome hunting bullet.

From all the brain-pounding I've received from defenders of "A-Max Target" specific bullets, there appears volumes to be learned from "A-Max" hunters afield. I cannot argue with success in reality afield, so I have learned much to date. Cliffy

Me and friends use the 140gr Amax from 6,5mm. It puts down roe deer (small), tahr (tough), and red deer (whitetail sized) very well. Wouldn't use it for moose.

I also use 87gr Vmax from my 243 on the small roe deer. Knocks them through both shoulders every time. Pictures can be found in THIS 243 RIFLE THREAD. Wouldn't use the Vmax for bigger game.

There are so many great hunting bullets in this weight range why take the chance.......

I agree, why take a chance? You can't kill what you can't hit, so I would go with the more accurate bullet that works on game. So the AMax would be my pick! ;D

From someone like me, who strongly defended amaxs for hunting, im starting to find my self taking the other side. Yes the are hellish accurate and i have made some awesome long range kills but I've also had some spectacular failures at close range. I'm switching to accubonds- very accurate and tough as nails.

Cliffy, I never thought I would ever hear you say that! Have you been beat down that bad? (LOL) (just Stabbing At you) I have read many post of yours, and know how you feel about using the right bullets to hunt with. Causing the right amount of ternimal damage! I must say I do agree with your belief's and respect for the animals that I take!

Doesn't the answer from the manufacturer answer the question. "only on small game."
There are a lot of good hunting bullets out there. Why take the chance?

Don't forget that Berger used to say that their bullets were not for hunting use, until hunters started taking game with them and giving them good feedback and now they advertise
them as a hunting bullet.

I think the reason Hornady says it's not for hunting is because they didn't do any testing with that bullet for hunting purposes since it's a match bullet, but that doesn't mean it won't work! I think shot placement is way more important than bullet construction.
