for some of my experience with 223 and 8208. YMMV

Drew

I loaded 23.2 of 8208 and a 77 gr. SMK and it shot well for the first load and the first iron sights i shot since the 70's….. i'm pleased and thanks for the help guys……… jim

I was thinking of putting a scope on it, to help in load development. Do the mounts that screw on to the handle work? or are they a POS..?…….. jim

Jim, those mounts that have a stud that anchors to the carry handle are not the way to go. I have tried them and they put the optic so high that you need a raised butt pad to get even remotely comfortable not to mention that they are not that solid either. My AR upper receivers all are flat tops and are much easier to use any type optic out there.

The single-stud carry-handle mounts are less than desirable but they are far better than trying to use open sights for load development and good enough to show you what you want to know. One can also spend a few hours and epoxy bed the forward and rearward contact points of the mount for solid mounting with a custom fit to your upper. Just be sure to use plenty of release agent and clay where needed to prevent a permanant fix. Doing this and using a nice high-power scope is the preferred setup. Still no avoiding the high scope position - but this is for load development and not everyday use. I don't use a cheekweld when doing development. Works.

That is what is was thinking of, bed just like i do an action with wax on the handle and i was even thinking of an other screw forward of the one that is in there. ……. I think it would really help for load development …….. jim

When it gets here i will bed it with the single screw first and se how it does, if needed it will go on the mill and add some holes……… jim

If you want to shoot heavier and single load, try berger 82's or smk80's with the same charge of 8202, loaded .015 off the lands. They hammer out of those krieger 1/7's.
Many people have experiemented with good results loading the 82 bergers to mag lenth with 8202 also, but I dont have a charge weight.

I suggest 69 grain Sierra Match Kings over 24.5 grains of Varget, RE-15 or N140. These powder charges and bullet combinations has worked well in a bunch of rifles. I've used Remington 7.5's, CCI-BR4's, Winchester std. small rifle primers and Russian 556kvb's. All shot well, tune up or down to suit your rifle's preferences, you have wiggle room both ways.

I use Winchester brass most of the time in tournaments but Lake City works well too.
