A lighter stock for a Ruger scout.

I really like the Ruger scout in a left hand 308. Does any one make a lighter stock for the left hand? The laminate is a beast !

Have you drilled out any material under the barrel, in the butt stock and pistol grip yet? Makes a big difference on my laminate hunting stocks.

Forgive a beginner, but wouldn't drilling out the stock weaken the structure of the stock? Primarily the pistol grip.

Of course it will compromise the structural integrity of the stock to some degree, and depending on how you do it.
What would concern me is it's still a wood stock, drilling holes and hogging out material out of it will remove the finish that's there, and you will certainly make it very easy for water to get into the core of the whole stock, and it will absorb it and swell to some degree.
And you should'nt be too suprised if it will you a POI change at some point, would'nt be the first time it happens.
Depending on the climate you live in it might not be much of a issue though.
Just a little thing to consider.

I like this idea with the laminates. The layers of wood are impregnated with the epoxy, so should not need sealing again after drilling.

I am set up to bored butt stocks for lead weights, so boring the rifle stock should not be too hard. I will try to set it up this weekend.

Laminates are super tough and it is no big deal to seal the stock up with a little oil or even poly. When things slow down I am going to set up the Bridgeport and hog some material out of a too heavy carbine that I have.

When Rutland Plywood first started selling laminate for gun stocks in the 80s Ruger did some vicious testing before adopting the laminate as a production material. Ruger and TC were early adopters of laminate and they sold a pile of it.

Please share some pictures of your work and do not be surprised if your tools dull quick. Laminate can be tough to machine.

I finally got around to getting an MPI stock for this rifle, saved about a pound and a bit. When I find my scale I will weigh it and take pictures!
