A great evening chucking! Warning: carnage!

My 15 yo son and I finally got out for only second time this year to do some woodchuck hunting on a new farm. Action was fast and furious. We got 3 apiece ranging from 129 yards out to 331 yards all in 1 hour. Was tough remembering where they all died so we could do a photo op. Son was using his trusty 22-250 LRPV with 53 V-Max and I had my 8 twist .220 Swift with 75 A-max. Does quite a number on them. Son told me the one i shot had pieces going into the air 6 feet.

We were just getting set up about 5PM and saw a deer in far corner of field jogging into woods, 30 seconds later a big coyote came out following the deer. I needed another 10 seconds and could've gotten a shot off.

Frank,

You need to take that coyote out before he thins out the chucks. Lol. Nice shooting. 8)

Regards, Paul

Paul has a good point here Frank. A couple of coyotes can thin things out real quick. I've watched coyotes get Chucks on 3 different occasions. It's like poetry in motion... the chucks don't have a chance. Its all over in about 10 seconds. :o

Good on you to take your son out hunting like that. That's what memories are made of and we need more father son relationships like you are culturing. WD

Nice work Frank! Wish you would have gotten the Yote!

Yes! I was thinking of carrying all the dead chucks into far corner and pile them up for a "bait pile" But we stuffed them into the numerous holes. We will be looking for the yote next trip back to that field. I am assuming the doe was leading it away from her fawns who were most likely hidden away somewhere.

Thanks for all the warm comments guys! My son is really liking varmint hunting over punching paper in the last year or so. We are gonna hit em hard here in NW Pa. as there are no rifle matchs in August. But many of the fields we hunt have still not been cut. Its been a very wet summer!

One of my favorite bullets is the .224 75 Amax and I shoot this out of a 1-7.7 twist .22-.250 with H4350. In the west chucks are the yellow bellied marmot or rock chuck. Some are real big like 12 pounds plus. Pound for pound they are among the toughest animals on the planet needing a fine bullet like the 75 Amax that increases performance on windy days.

I love the 22 cal 75 A-max bullet! Using them in my Swift and a .223 AI 8 twist rifle. You wouldn't think an economical priced bullet like them would be that accurate but they are! Plus terminal performance is devastating.

Curious what kind of velocity you are getting in your 22-250 with 75 A-Max?

A modest 3150 - 3200 but what counts is what it is out there beyond 300 yards. In addition to looking good with their diameter proportional boat tails is the sharp pointy plastic tip; they shoot well out of the 7.7 at near freezing temps making the 75 .224 Amax is a primo yote bullet for all ranges.

That is a modest speed, but I'm sure you are liking the accuracy which trumps everything else. I have 300 80 grain A-Max with AMP jackets that I am going to try before summer is out. My Swift is an 8 twist and with the rotational speeds achieved by my rifle I could have gotten away with a 9 twist for the 75''s.
