A different kind of barrel vise

I could not find one like this in the Brownells catalog. This beast weighs 45 pounds without the compression blocks in place. Probably has a cast iron frame. It was rusty so it got blasted and powder coated. The screw is 2"- 12 Acme square root and hardened. I snagged a piece of 7/8ths. 4140 for a sliding tee handle. I made some tooling that allows me use a scrap barrel as a core to pour the lead sleeves. They fit barrels exact and no need for rosin. I have had no problems breaking free the oldest Remington 700's with rust, corrosion and thread lock compound.

I got this thing from a yard sale long ago. It was in an open box in a trash pile on the sidewalk of the residence the sale was at. It was a day from visiting the land fill. I gave the woman $20.00 for the contents. I did buy a lot of other shooting stuff, though. I made the action wrench, too.

Anyone ever see a vise like this one?

That is the exact same vice my smith uses.
I asked him about it on Sunday, said he picked it up at an estate sale years ago.

I wish somebody made one of those way too big vises. It would be a good income for a shop tinkerer. Make it about twice as beefy as it should be

Hey Mulligan,

I see your profile location is western CO. I am 250 miles east of you near Limon. The vise was found at a home in the metro Denver area. Somehow I am thinking the Colorado school of trades gunsmithing program might be a common denominator here. Maybe it was a blank casting the students were assigned to make their own vise? ie..finish up the machining and fab the blocks, screw. There is not an ID mark anywhere on this tool. Out of curiosity I may call the school for possible answers.

This action wrench and jaw parts were also in that box. They cleaned up nicely.
