A Change in My Alias?

Don't fret, I don't have any pictures, so I am not going to boast about a ground hog I shot.

But to the point, yesterday was my ninth ground hog safari of the 2024 campaign. I didn't think things could get much worse as far as available hunting areas but yesterday I discovered another nail was driven into the sport I like so much. A farm I have hunted for over 25 years plowed under the only remaining alfalfa field. Even worse, it was the best field since it bordered a long tree line and historically an excellent location for hogs. Since the farmer no longer is in the diary business and is strictly a grain farmer, I guess he has no need for alfalfa.

I am down to 3 farms now and most of the land is not huntable for varmints due to planting in strips and the type of crops planted. I routinely see 10 times more deer than groundhogs and twice as many foxes on each safari!

I shouldn't complain, I've had a good run. I need 11 more to reach 2,000 then I think I'll hang up the range finder and become exclusively a club range shooter.

The farmers are going to change my alias from "The Ground Hog Man" to the "The Cigar Smoker / Falls Asleep in a Chair Man".

Dang Don…sorry to hear that! I’m confident you’ll hit 2000. Hopefully you’ll come across some new farms!

One of my farmers just had to replant a soybean field. Saw eight in the same field. Told to get on the job. Probably a whole fam damily. I'll be out there on patrol tomorrow evening.

Yea, they do. You have a narrow window with them, but it can be quite fruitful, excuse the pun.

I have one farm where this year the farmer put in soybeans after years of planting corn. It borders a long tree line. I am going out this week on a recon mission to investigate if the beans are sprouting. This could be a bonanza. In years past when he planted alfalfa, it was hog heaven, or I should save hog graveyard.
