9mm 124g Berrys RN/XTremeHP load data question

So I have loaded Berrys RNPlated .356 at max 4.8 gn of Vit N340, COL 1.142. Verified Avg of 10 rounds 963 thru a 3.1 inch barrel temp 70deg, 29 bar. Also ran 10 rnds Blazer 124 gn thru chrono avg 1020, manufacturer states it should be 1090 so chrono is good to go. Vihtavuori data states thru a 4" barrel should be 1155 for this bullet, powder, COL recipe. the Xtreme is running 848 at 4.4 gn 1.072 COL (suggested for N330). So I guess I am seeing slower velocities due to a shorter barrel. What would you suggest I work up to while being safe and not over pressuring the barrel, and or vel to fast for the bullet (1500)? PS barrel is rated for P+. I have 4lb of N340 powder so Im looking for good guesstimates of how high up I should try to work up the powder charge? For example should I work up in .2 or .3 gn increments till I hit 1100? Im looking to move velocities up to manufactured ammo so as to resemble same recoil as self def ammo.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

yes and no...you cannot make your bbl longer by adding powder.
that does not mean you cannot work up a safe load in your gun...
but recoil will also go up..accuracy may suffer
its a practice bullet remember that it aint a jacketed selfdefence bullet

Tahnks for the sound advice. Actually that is what I was looking for was suggested bump in powder charge to quickly get to similar recoil as EDC SD ammo. Im looking to work up load that resembles SD ammo so when I plink or practice its more realistic.

Velocity alone will not equal a factory loads recoil impulse. Your using same bullet weight but a plated instead of a jacketed bullet. Also burn speed of powder influences recoil impulse. As long as your not loading a light load you should be fine. If and when you have to use a defense load, the addrenalen rush will take over.

Ohhh. OK thanks, that sounds logical that velocity is not correlated linearly with recoil impulse. Different powder burn rate not something I thought about..... Cool thanks !!!

The factory Blazer ammo is probably plated.

Your goal is valid, but there is no way to know which canister powder, if any, that CCI uses.

So your choices are:

1) Experiment with more powders.
2) Use a camera to record shooting factory ammo and your reloads until you can get the same recoil.

I have found that Longshot gives a very sharp, snappy recoil compared to other powders. Hodgdon says 4.8 to 5.8 for a 124 plated. A medium load will probably get you close to a self defense load.

Range Day report: Berry's 124 gn HBFP-TP, P365 9mm, 3.1" barrel. @ 7 yd, 10 rnds each load, most all grouped 1 to 1 1/4 inch (from bench, not freehand) so no real big difference in accuracy. Both N340 and Acc # 2 ladders were within published load data. I found the same results for the N340 as with my previous ladders. If I use N340 I would have to run at higher then recommended load data to achieve same velocity as my EDC ammo (Fed HST 124 gn). However, for ACC # 2 I did find a mid range load, which the velocity was close (40 f/s slower) to EDC JHP. For that load no real difference in recoil vs; CCI Blazer 124 FMJ, Fed HST 124 JHP, Fed American FMJ 115. Since ACC #2 is quite a bit cheaper than N340, easier to find, and I can use about 1.5 gn less I will save $ on the reloads (~ 500 extra rounds/lb of powder) and have a similar performing practice ammo. Thanks to all those who helped me on my journey. As a side note I was using cheap (Servicios Aventuras Small Pistol Primers (1000 ct.)) and 18 out of 110 reloads were misfires. Also burned up about 100 additional rounds of CCI Blazer 124 gn FMJ and not one misfire so its not the P365.

Ref misfires: did you try to fire them a second or third time? Possibly the primers were not fully seated. If so they will usually fire on the second or third try after having been seated by the previous blows. Primers should be below flush with the head of the case. Also pull the bullets, if the back end is blackened and sooty, then there was no powder in the round. Sometimes you can not hear a primed round with a bullet seated fire. And sometimes a primer will actually push a bullet a little ways down the barrel. Any time you get a no fire, check the barrel before continuing.

No didnt try 2nd/3rd. Saved them no soot. Pretty sure there is powder in em. Going to take to range next visit and give em a 2nd/3rd try. Good point yes primers seated proper depth, not sooty or any signs of firing no squibs. They were only 79$ for 1000. If they dont go boom and its cause they are defective, Ill pull them and recycle case, powder bullet. Thanks for your advice I appreciate it!

Happy St. Patricks day! Range Report: Took the misfires to the range and 2nd-3rd time was a charm. Most all went bang. Must be hard primer?????

Thanks to you all for your feedback.
