99 Savage

I didn't know where to post this, so I'm doing it here. A buddy brought an old 99 Savage in 300 Savage out the other night to show it to me. It's a 1935 model with 24" barrel, shotgun type butt plate, flip up open rear sights, and the most beautiful Lyman 30-1/2 tang sight I have ever seen. It's been carried a lot but very well cared for. I shot it offhand at a spot on a tree at 50 yards, and hit the bottom edge at 6 o clock. I'm going to shoot it some more this week. I don't do pictures, but maybe he will. Barlow

The 300 Savage is a really good cartridge that the 308 Win killed off. There is about as much difference in the 30-06 and 308 Win as there is between the 300 Savage and 308 Win. The Savage 99 can be a really accurate rifle and a great woods rifle.

Yeah Barlow, I’ll get some photos up next time I get to your place. Maybe you should consider shooting it at something more that a tree in November?

Patch76, I just may do that. I cleaned the barrel with Butch's and then used Shooters Choice to see if there was any copper in it, absolutely none. I was amazed. Barlow

I have a 99 in 308 I bought when I was in the navy. Killed a lot of deer and 1 elk with it but haven't shot it in several years. They are a neat little rifle and easy to carry.

The 30-1/2 Lyman tang sight is a machining marvel (at least to me). The dovetail in the base for windage adjustment is almost imperceptible. No slop in the adjustment, and guess what, no cnc. Barlow

Neat rifle. I also have one. It has taken me a whole lot of fussing, including washers under the trigger spring, to get that thing to shoot reasonable.

Play with it and enjoy.

I had one and sold it. I had a puppy chew the for end and decided to get rid of it. Big mistake I should have fixed it. Been kicking my self over it for years. I now live in Texas and don't see many 99's around.

Same here. I sold one in .243, on this forum if I remember correctly. That is one of the rifle selling mistakes I have made. But, I ain't dead yet!

I have a Mod. 99 that was manufactured in either 1918 or 1919 according to the serial number. It is chambered in .22 High Power. I've had it for many years and only recently realized it is a take down model. It sure makes cleaning easier when the barrel can be removed in about 30 seconds.

My older brother hunted with a 99, 300 Savage for 40 plus years. I loaded 130 gr Speer HP's for it and with them he killed many deer. He lost a leg in a logging accident 35 years ago, so he wasn't in to chasing wounded deer. His favorite saying was, "pull the trigger then get out your knife". Barlow

My old well used 99B, a gift from one of my late uncles.

Unfortunately is suffers from "lever droop" but one of these days when I get a "Aroundtoit" I'll take care of that. My goal? I have no way of knowing how many whitetails it may have sent to the here after but I'll like to use it to send at least one more.:D

Excuse my ignorance, but how would one tell if theirs is a take-down model or not? And what timeframe were they mfg’d?
Patch 76

My first rifle was a 99 in 250-3000, it took a lot of deer. You could fit two black tail deer in the trunk of a 64 chevy.
