95 TMK RPMs

Hi guys,

Has anyone ran the 95 TMK from a 7 twist barrel in the 3100 range?

RPMS are quite high and I’m worried if I do it I’ll blow them up.

thanks on advance.

3153 Average over 5 shots
75 degrees
22” 7 Twist
95 TMK

All 5 made it to the target again. I’m going to test tomorrow with a ten shot string and longer range. But so far these are not having an issue.

Maybe a shorter barrel helps or possibly rifling style? This is a Broughton 5c barrel. Not sure if that should be easier on bullets but maybe it is??

I think the short barrel is a big factor: less friction on the jacket. I think bore size matters alot too. If you get a tight bore, they go pop. If you get a looser bore, everything is dandy.

Thanks for the data point!

One more test today.

I fired 20 rounds using the 95 TMKs at 3153 from a 6x47 with a 22” Broughton 5C barrel, 7 twist.

Shots were fired from 400 to 835 yards. I fired 2 shots at each gong I have (five total) to verify the ballistics program then fired two 5 shot strings in rapid fire from the magazine to simulate a PRS type environment.

All 20 shots found steel so I believe, of maybe hope, this is conclusive that these bullets won’t have any problems blowing up in route to the target.

The purpose of this whole test was actually to try find a bullet that shot as wel all as the 110s did, with slightly more velocity and less recoil.

Parts 1 and 2 were achieved however I don’t believe it’s any less recoil. With the increase in powder charge it feels like a wash. The only thing noticeable is less torque on the gun when it’s fired. So it helped some.

Most of you are thinking, why doesn’t he just use a brake?

I physically cannot handle shooting a brake. For some reason I get pressure headaches similar to what you’d have with really bad allergies or head cold. No clue why. I’ve played trumpet for years and get the same headaches when I play extended periods of high and loud music. The headaches are tolerable but I refuse to get them from shooting so brakes are out for me.

Suppressed would be the next option and I might have to try it however this particular rifle isn’t threaded.....yet.

Hope there is a tidbit or two of useful stuff in here for anyone.

Thanks!

I too have found that the recoil change is not much when moving to nearby bullet weights. For my 30-06, I couldn't tell much difference between a max load 180 or a max load 165 - both had stout recoil. I had to load 125s to notice much of an improvement. The biggest reduction came when I dropped the powder charge down 15gns and slowed things down ~500fps. That doesn't really help you out much though.

No need to explain it to me! I can feel the difference in my ears afterwards like you mention - which means it's doing damage. I value the shooters around me and don't want to subject them to that either. I had one rifle with a brake for a short while and none of my friends or wife would come shooting when I was bringing that gun. They specifically asked if I was bringing it and then would opt out if I was. Not that I'm surprised; when someone with a brake sets up next to me, I leave too. I took the brake off and was able to shoot just as small with the rifle and it didn't cause the headaches afterwards. Decided at that point that I didn't need a brake on anything I own.
