Hi,
This may amuse some readers:-
When I was younger, I thought it would be fun to have a heavy calibre African rifle, reading in Guns & Ammo about the 577 Nyati. I am a keen falling block owner, and wrongly presumed the Ruger No.1 was a very strong action. So, when my 577 N.E. Ruger No.1 arrived from SSK, I began working up loads. I presumed it was like all cartridges, a cratered primer or tight extraction, and you then back off. I never saw tight extraction, nor a cratered primer. But ejection puzzled me for the case rim seemed tight upon the top of the block, as if the block needed more metal removed to let the rim of the large case past. When reloading fired cases, I suddenly noticed the case wall was no longer at 90 degrees to the case head. The whole action had flexed ! I remember the numbers because they matched, the chrono showed 9,500 ft lbs ME from a 9 1/2 Ruger No.1 ! I guess we were lucky not to have had the rifle blow up. SSK won't even use the Ruger No. 1 for 338 Lapua now, though they will do it in 510 Whisper.
Gee
