8mm Remington Magnum

I was wondering if anybody has ever necked the 8mm Remington Magnum to a .338? I was wondering if it would be worth it, for the higher BC bullets available. I think the action is long enough for the Ultra length stuff. So the magazine must be longer too, right?

sounds like a good idea however the 338rum would be the better round . unless you are looking for something different.

Why would the 338 RUM be a better round? Because it does not have the belt? Are the case heads the same size? I hear it is quite expensive to rebuild the bolt face.

The 8mm Remmag is based on the far older .375 H&H case, a full length belted magnum. There have been many .338 wildcats based on it over the years such as the .338 OKH, and even the original .340 Weatherby is such a developement. It has been the basis for a lot of 1,000 yard competition chamberings although usually in .30 caliber.

The RUMs are based on the .404 Jeffrey case, but have a rebated rim so that they will work with a standard belted magnum boltface, likewise the short magnums.

The belt itself is a leftover from the .375 H&H magnum. Since early rimless cases were modified from rimmed designs, the cases had a LOT of taper, and used the belt to headspace off of. Nowdays, headspace is done of the shoulder and thus the belt no longer serves any functional purpose. But since the first cartridges named "magnum" had belts, the belt was considered one of the identifying characteristics of a "magnum" cartridge. A cartridge appendix if you will.

All that said, a .338-8mm would make for a fine chambering.

yes i would elimnate the belt and go with rum cartridge but that's just my way of thinking . however i am building a 8mm Rem. mag for a guy right now and you cannot talk him out of that cartridge .

I think it is called a 338 SwampDonkey.

WTF? Tootall's idea is no more ridiculous than most other wildcats we spend our time and money on. To each his own, so why the attitude?

Hummm . Why not 340 WEATHERBY brass, dies,factory ammo. A lot cheaper/easier same ballistics :o ::)

I had a 8 mag when it first came out. A hotrod round .As a reloader just starting out it was interesting, big problem was bullets for the speed. Today it has good bullets good idea on a 338 8mag.
