8mm Gibbs

Been doing some load work-up for an 8mm Gibbs lately. Ran several different powder bullet combinations through QuickLoad using 60k as an upper limit. 74gr measured case capacity(for work up purposes, actual measured capacity ranged from 74-75gr in DEN 42 brass and Rem brass(Remington brass averaging 74.38gn and DEN 42 74.43).

Velocity measured with a ProChrono Digital @ 10'(consistently about 50 fps under predicted across the board). Mauser 98k, 600mm barrel. It goes without saying I suppose that this load data is for entertainment purposes ONLY, not to be considered safe, not pressure tested.

I used a 200gr Speer Hot Cor for initial testing, cases formed from DEN 42 military surplus 30/06 cases. Test was shot outdoors at around 30 degrees F. COL 3.270", WLR primer.

Chose 3 powders, Big Game, IMR-4895, and Reloader 17. Results as follows:

Big Game start 56.5gr@2534fps maximum 59.5gr@2661fps

IMR-4895 start 52.5gr@2539fps maximum 55.5gr@2653fps

Reloader 17 start 59.5gr@2583fps maximum 62.5gr@2760fps

Sample size was rather small with only 3 rounds per load in .5gr steps. Primers aren't exactly growing on trees right now(not short yet, but I'm trying to use a little restraint).

Next test will be with 185gr Rem PSPCL.

I've been working with an 8mm Gibbs for a couple years now, I's share some data if you want. RE17 and H4350 have worked well. Focus mostly on 185 PSPCL but some others as well.

Sounds great to me, sorry I haven't been on for a while.
