88 gr vs. 90 gr. Bergers

First, I am new to the 6BR. I have a 1:10 twist 28" Krieger in a 6BR that just installed on a Savage Target action. I want to work up loads for 200-300 yd target shooting, group) for when the wind is high, always in Oklahoma). I know the ballistic coefficients are very similar. My experience is that flat base bullets,88gr) are easier to tune than boattails,90 gr). However, I have read that the 88 gr FB high B.C. is a picky to tune.

What is your experience with these bullets?

Thanks, tiny

Funny you should ask...

I just gave the 88s a good, hard try in my 44gr case cap 6mm wildcat, over the past 2yr.

I found them "flighty" in wind. This was esp true when I chose them for my shooting @ the West Pennsylvania Groundhog
Shooting Championship match, late Sep in Beaverdale,PA.
They shoot 100, 300 and 500; there.

For 500, I did not feel compelled to go w/ heavier 105-107s
, my rifle has a 29" 1-8 "5-C" rifled
Broughton ). My thinking was that a good aero mid-wt 6mm should "cut-it"; for use out to 500.

After the shoot, I ended up wishing I had opted for for Sierra 95MKs, when the 88s gave more windage than I had hopd to see; for the prevalent condition,s).

Also, during one range cession this Summer, all 5 88s in one group "smeared" on paper. That is, formed oblong holes, all the same shape. Even part of the parper to one side of the holes looked to be pushed back; and not punctured. The effect reminded me of cheese grate-type holes/slots. This only has happened once, and in not all-that-bad of "wind".

The barrel only has 500rounds on it at the time, and that particular load, while slow ) was not below 3,000fps Mv.

I can only surmise that is was that particular windspeed and angle relative to the bore axis THAT day.

I like high load density, so I use slower powders and mid wt plus 6mm bullets for all my load trials. Since my best accuracy load w/ the 88s also occured when the cases were full of powder, and nearly full of powder w/ Sierra 95s; I decided to buy a box of Berger 90HPBTs..... just tonight, from Sinclairs.

NO..I have not shot these as yet. But... I already know beast accuracy powders/charges for Berger 88LD, Sierra 85BTHP, Sierra
95Mk, Sierra 107Mk, et all. I have apretty good notion oof where to start out w/ powder/charges, for use w/ the Berger 90s

I am not convinced that BT bullets are harder to tune.
In MY rifle and all loads tried, the vanilla Sierra 6mm 85BTHP out-shoots all comers ! I did not select it for the PA shoot, figuring that 500yd windage & elevation would be "excessive".
I do though, have a superlative live groundhog round, w/ my Sierra 85BTHP loads.

If you beat me to it, please let me know how Berger 90s work for YOU !
