No, I use a front aperture about the same size as the plate diameter at 100 yds, and dial the rear down as small as I can get focused light (0.7 on this day, can change based on light). Is the plate filling the entire rear aperture at 100? I can dial my Merit to cover about a ~4" dot at 100 and it certainly helps the group size. That's some good shooting.....
I was pretty lucky with this cmp unit. No razor mark, excellent fit and finish. It was supposedly a rusty, but no damaging corrosion was found. Took the bolt apart and cleaned that, and changed to lighter trigger spring. Tried about 4 or 5 moderately priced ammo. It shot Wolf Match Target the best, but that recipe has since changed, so I switched to this Norma match. I am just a novice shooter, and don’t want to break the bank with the high end stuff. Some ideas for 82G accuracy:
1, Clean up the muzzle crown. Kimber did a good job but not bench rest level.
2, Examine carefully the mouth of the chamber. Most 82Gs have a sharp edge around the top
of the chamber mouth. This causes occasional shaving of the bullet as its loaded.
3, The stock trigger can be brought down to about 8 ~ 10 oz with careful polishing of all the parts and the inside of the trigger housing. Also substitution of the trigger spring with a lighter one. WARNING do not go below 8 oz or you will get unintentional discharges or firing on bolt closing.
All the usual accuracy steps such as epoxy bedding, pillar bedding, torque adjustments on action screws, etc also help.
i asume you have tested assorted match .22 ammo to find what your rifle likes.
The above work AND Lapua Center X ammo got me and my 82G up to the top of the Expert class of rimfire prone competition. End average was 99.2% when I moved to an Anschutz 54 for the last 0.05% to 99.7%, Master classification.
Thanks. It is incredible how much difference the rear iris adjustment and light on the target makes on the group size. The 100 yd shooting is so much fun that I just ordered official dark center NRA TQ-4 targets from Midway. Should be a fun summer! That's good for a pale target. Contrast really helps with aperture sights.
