80 gr Amaxs to 80 gr ELD-M Switch

I would like to hear back from folks whom have real world experiences with having made, or have attempted to make the switch from shooting the 80 gr Amax bullet over to the 80 gr ELD-M bullet. Did you retain accuracy? Did the same load work, or did you have to rebuild the load? Or, with attempting to make the switch, did you end up having to find a new alternative? i have about 150 or less left of the 80 Amaxs, so i am looking for either using the 80 ELD-Ms or a different pill all together..

Your input will be greatly appreciated!

I switched and used both side by side. They both had very close performance results. Seem to be the same bullet out of my 22-250. Pushing both around 3200-3300. Same drop data to 500+. Same accuracy as well. Very happy and glad that things look good for the match version of the ELD.

The Amax and eldm I compared (30cal 178amax/eldm & 208amax/eldm) had just about the same exact dimensions. Just the tips were different.

When I found it was time to replenish my stock of 52-grain Amax bullets, I was pretty upset to find they were discontinued. A call to Hornady revealed that all Amax bullets had been replaced by the ELD-M bullets. They stated that the only difference was in the formulation of the polymer tip to be more heat erosion resistant at high velocities. All dimensions and loading data remains unchanged. The load I was using in my .22/250 and Amax bullets is producing equivalent groups with the current ELD-M 52-grain bullets. I realize that this isn't the same bullet you are asking about, but may give you hope!

I am going to try to get some and do a alternating test.. if they group, well i will indeed feel good about it..

If the Amax grouped, the ELD-M will also in the same gun. You'll be very satisfied in the results. I have a 243 that will not shoot the Amax but it won't shoot the eld m either. If it shoots the Amax it will shoot the eld in my experience. Running some 140 elds in my 260 very soon. It shot the Amax superbly so I expect the same from the eld. Good luck.

The load is deff on the low end node, the speed avg is 2660 fps. But it is showing to be very accurate.. plus, will only be shooting this load out to 200 yards.. wind drift is looking to be 1.5 moa in a full value 10mph wind.

What cartridge ? I haven't tried them in any of my 223 rifles. Kinda fond of the 69 Sierra's and 70 vlds in my 223s. Need a minimum of 8 twist for the 80s.
