#8-40 NS tap ?

I believe you will only find 8X32 at Lowes.

It will take a specialty house to have the 8X40, ie: MSC, Penn/Tool, Brownells, etc.

I ordered a couple from McMaster Carr, set up and drilled and tapped my reciever last night. It wasn't the easiest tapping job I've ever done. But I got it done without a problem. I can't ever remember a Remington 700 stainless action being that tough to tap.
Tried several tapping fluids and Moly-d seemed to do the best.

lately i have ben buying from KBCTOOLS.COM--8/40 TAPS ARE $7.75.GOOD QUALITY'FAST SHIPPING GOOD SERVICE..TRY THEM..

Years ago, a gunsmith told me he only used high carbon steel taps, because if he broke one off in the hole, he could anneal it almost instantly with an oxy-acetylene torch and get off of it before harming the receiver (or whatever part) he was tapping. He also used heat-shielding paste around the hole. The high carbon taps would soften enough to drill out, but hi-speed steel taps wouldn't. He used to do a lot of O3-A3's and broke a lot of 6-48 taps in them, but after annealing, could get them out with tap extractors or by drilling them out. Seems like 2 flute taps would be the strongest, but he used 3 flute taps.

I don't know if Brownell's or anybody still has hi-carbon taps, but it made sense to me.

I believe that a #29 drill is the tap drill for an 8-40 tap. I wasted some money on a set of chinese # drills. They are worthless except for making pins out of the shanks. My #29 and #31 drills now are American made, probably hi-speed steel. I also keep a #31 and a #29 carbide drill just in case. I haven't had to use either one of them. I got them from Brownell's.

Good luck, Tom

Broken taps:

Remove them with a carbide endmill carefully.

Remove them by hammer and punch method.

Remove them by TIG welding a new shaft to it.

EDM them out.

This is why gunsmiths charge so much for holes drilled an tapped into and action.

Fastenalls are owned by locals who buy a franchise. The guy who owns the one in my town is super helpfull, but the one in the town down the road has a real butt running it.

gbee---next time you have a need for tapping stainless steel try using FANTASTIC cleaner for the lube, you'll be surprised at how easy it works.....

The best lube I ever found for drilling and tapping

Stainless was the original Permatex dark smelly

gasket compound.

Why it works ,I don't know but it does work.

Steve
