Bench

If you shoot at known target ranges then you don't need (or want) FFP. At the high mags, the crosshair can get huge.

The Nightforce NXS 8-32 is probably the best you'd get in that mag range for less than $2500.

The Nightforce Benchrest 8-32 or 12-42 will serve you well if the rifle is for bench use only and not thrown around. They are both less than $1500.

Sightron has a pretty good following on here and they make an 8-32 in Second FP as well. It's about $850+/-. Heard great things about their customer service.

Burris has the "XTRII F-Class"in 8-40X mag range (actually first focal plane) for around $1200. Heard mostly good things about them. It has a massive 34mm main tube so it has a pretty wide adjustment range.

Bushnell has their XRS elite tactical 4.5-30X for about $2000 - I believe that's FFP actually. A lot of successful shooters use that.

If you want to get to top-dollar, PM me and we can talk about Schmidt and Bender, Zeiss, Valdada, Tangent Theta, Premier, US Optics, etc...But don't expect to get a good one of those for less than $2500 (some are actually over $5000 for the best of the best).

Remember that higher magnification means lower clarity/more mirage in general. Nightforce, Zeiss, and especially Schmidt and Bender are well known for good optical quality throughout the whole range though. If it's a good/custom rifle, any scope less than $1000 MAY hold you back (notice the MAY).

Also make sure you use good rings, one-piece bases (unless the receiver holes are perfect), and then lap the rings into their final position before installing the scope. Let's just say I have experience with the effects of badly misaligned rings on a scope with an $800 price tag :(.

Just my $0.02.

In the article I attached above, the March scope had the worst tracking of all of the scopes he tested. He even sent it back to get another one assuming it was a defect, but the second one was bad too.

He incorrectly tested the March scope. They use a different standard measurement to the one he based his tracking tests off.

There are 2000π milliradians (≈ 6283.185 mrad) in a circle; thus a milliradian is just under 1⁄6283 of a circle, or ≈ 3.438 minutes of arc. Each of the definitions of the angular mil are similar to that value but are easier to divide into many parts.

  • 1⁄6283 The “real” trigonometric unit of angular measurement of a circle in use by telescopic sight manufacturers using (stadiametric) rangefinding in reticles. This is the measurement he based his tracking tests off, which many scope manufacturers use.
  • 1⁄6400 of a circle in NATO countries - (This is the measurement I believe March scopes use)
  • 1⁄6000 of a circle in the former Soviet Union and Finland (Finland phasing out the standard in favour of the NATO standard).
  • 1⁄6300 of a circle in Sweden. The Swedish term for this is streck, literally "line". Sweden (and Finland) have not been part of NATO nor the Warsaw Pact. Note however that Sweden has changed its map grid systems and angular measurement to those used by NATO, so the "streck" measurement is obsolete.

And just to clarify, every March scope that is currently sold has the USMC Milrad spec. From the March Optics site:

"Any March Scope with a Mil-rad reticle that you purchase from March Optics USA, Inc. or from Bullets.com is guaranteed to precisely match the USMC spec Mil-rad which is 1/6283"
