7x57 loads

I shoot a Remington 700 in 7x57 Mauser, the 139 grain Hornady get 2830 fps with a good case of IMR 4350.
For those who shoot the 7mm-08, these two are ballistic twins, the 7x57 is just about 100 years older, :}}

Hi Shooter

Everyone seems to agree with what you think about both these cartridges(if I understand what I read on various threads and forums)but I have problem believing that 6mm of brass case length in the 7x57 doesn't make any difference in terms of MV,impact power,stability and then accuracy...I don't mean to be fussy,just try to get things straight...

If you load them to the same pressures they are the same but where the 7X57 comes in is you have to use a long action and you can shoot some heavy for caliber bullets without having to seat them into the powder chamber. The 7X57 earned it's reputation using the loooooog 175 gr bullet. It would just keep on penetrating through things. Bell used it in the guise of a Rigby designation caliber but it was the same as the 7X57 with the 175 gr FMJ to kill most of the huge number of elephants he killed. He was a good shot and could brain shoot one from most any angle.

I built a hunting rifle based on a VZ-24 Mauser action and a 7X57 military barrel. I did this based on the fact this round will kill any North American game.

I did some research and found the best killing power was the TTSX Barnes at 140 gn and the 162 gn A-MAX for ideal expansion as well as super accuracy. With Winchester cases and long COL (to fill up the huge throat) I get 2650 fps which is ideal for this heavy bullet with super expansion and 2800 fps with the 140, and Quick Load says RL-17 is the most efficient powder for 7X57.
I am one of those folks that do not think I need a super duper magnum to down a 120 lb Black tail at 40 yds!

I picked up some 175 grain Hornady SP bullets to try out in my Remington 7x57, I should be able to get 2500 fps plus with careful reloading. I think this is good bear medicine.
I had a number of chances to buy a 7mm mag, but with the little 7 dropping everything I shot, I didn't see the need for a bigger 7mm rifle.

I am a 7x57 user as well, I shot only on round at game so far with it and that one round provided a years worth of elk meat. I use 160 gr. noslers at about 2650 and it will kill all the elk or deer I need it to. :)

Sometimes I wonder if the Super Magnums are supposed to do the cleaning and butchering for you so the pack out is easier... I am working on a 7x57 sporter, and believe that 30-06 is about the most super magnum I'll need for a good long time.

7x57 (and its fraternal twin, the 7mm08) is a great round. Excellent all around hunting round and just the ticket for high power silhouette.
Used to think the same way about my 30-06 until I tried a .300WSM. Does good things with 30cal bullets with similar recoil to the 30-06. Try one..... you'll like it. My only 30-06 these days is my M-1.
