7STW 1:9.25” twist max bullet weight?

Hi all,
Quick question.
Have as above Rem Sendero 26” barrel, with the above twist (factory barrel) will it stabilise anything heavier than 180gr?
Currently running 168gr ABLR’s with very good results but may go higher in weight.

Cheers.

I have a 7stw in a Rem 700 BDL DM and I am shooting Berger 195gr EOL at 2950fps. They hammer at distance. Tested the load out to 925yds and shoots really good.

What twist are you running?
Have looked at the Berger stability calculator and I am unsure if this twist will work.

Cheers.

I had that same setup until I shot the barrel out and went to an 8 twist. I shot 180 Berger VLD hunting in it at 865ft up to 10,000 ft and never had any issues even when it was -30 F

To me that 180 Berger is one of the best bullets out of that stw. I have shot rabbits up to Elk with it. Short or long range.

Have no drama with accuracy, this barrel shoots even with practically zero freebore.
I have 180’s on order and 175gr ABLR’s as well.
Started life as 7RM, just don’t like that cartridge.

Cheers.

I had several STWs and loved them. Great cartridge. I had a 10 twist though and was limited to 150 and 168s.

I have several 284s as well. In them, I found that a 9 twist would not stabilize the 180 ELDM at sea level. When I built my 284 hunting rifle, I went to 8.5 twists and that twist stabilizes them and the 175 ELDX fine.

Since bullet speed gains you very little in stability and the 195s are probably longer than the 180 ELDM, I would guess based on my experience that you limit would be the Berger 180 hunting vld.

Its just supposition but I thought I would share since you don't seem to be getting and direct hits. Hope that helps.

I am running the factory 9.25 twist barrel. Never verified the twist rate with a cleaning rod. It works I have taken it out to 925yds to verify drop and was spot on with strelok. Shot it more at 700yds and it shot extremely well. I maybe loosing a little bc but they way it shoots and bucks wind I am fine with it.

Ok thanks, I may just buy a box and see how I go. I will be taking this out to 1000, doing my load work up at 300 currently.
Only problem is no one has bullets in stock. Ordered 175gr ABLR back in June, still none to be had. Just received 2 boxes of 180gr Hybrid Hunters, haven’t loaded any yet.
The 168gr ABLR shoot like tacks in this rifle.
The other barrel is also a shooter, custom 29” 1:8” twist 264WM, makes one holers on a monotonous regularity at 200.
Just need to get out before it really heats up here (Australia) and get some venison on the ground.

Cheers.

bullseyeshtr,
Do you shoot at high elevation? Something like 5,000' or more? I'm surprised you're able to stabilize the 195gr Berger EOL in your 1:9.25 twist barrel and not seeing any erosion in BC, but elevation could explain it.

I am at 1500' in North Dakota. I have never verified the twist rate but it just a factory remington rifle except for the trigger. While I agree with you that it doesn't make sense but in the field results line up with what Strelok pro puts out.

I have loaded for 2 Rem 700 7STWs and the bullet that I had the best results from was the hornady 154gr interlocks, with H1000, The velocities arent screamers but I will take accuracy over speed any day.
