7SAUM & 168's

Well I'm in the process of building my 7saum savage 24" small shank barrel on a short action. I plan to used 168 vld's but cant decide on what powder to start with. Any guys using H4350 with saum? I do have other slower powders as well. Not much info using 168's, and I dont plan to shoot 180's right now. Any help would great.

I run H4831 in a Norma case ignited by a BR-2 with the 162 gr. A-Max in a 27" Bartlein tube. Not a real fast load, haven't chrono-ed yet but my come-ups to 500 yards suggest 2915 fps, however I am getting excellent accuracy.

When I was shooting the 7mm RSAUM, H4350 seemed to be the go too powder. Not saying that it will work in yours, but it is a good place to start.

Well thats good to know Froggy, thanks. I found some post that guys are running 56-57.5 grs H4350 with 180's; so I figured that would be a good place to start from. Of coarse start low and work up.

I have been working with another powder H4831 and i found a couple of good nodes. However the high end node is way over book max by 3 to 3 1/2grs. I'm not getting any pressure signs of any kind, including the brass. I found a good high node with 168 vld's and 63.4grs H4831. I did have my chrony but it not enough light,so i have no idea with speed but guess and 2960 fps with 24" barrel.

I did some searching and not much results, but I did find guys are using 61-62 grs H4831 and 180's. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ive only played with the 162 bthp in my saum. 64g h1000 was 3300 out of my 30 incher. Mine was built for elr shooting, so ive pretty much been shooting the 180's.

H1000 has been the best powder ive tried

I have 2 buddies that run shorter barreled saum's (28" lol) and h1000 is money in there's too

4381 sc was killing our brass but shooting lights out. we would be lucky to get 2 firings before the primer pockets were toast.

Not sure if thats useless or helpful info to you

How's it coming with 4831sc I just started work on a load shot my firs 5 at 100 yesterday kinda poopy 1 inch groups 168 bergers 63 gr h4831sc at 2950 our of a remington 7 alaskin ti 2.210 coal going to try 2.225 next this is the longest I can fit in the magazine
My 56.5 grains of rl 22 shoots 5/16 groups but the 100 fps volocity swing is killing me when shooting coyotes at long range
Any luck with 4831sc yet

Thanks,
If you can find some, try RL-17.

I have used RL17 works great
MRP is another really nice choice, but so far for performance over all I found the RL 22 with the 168's to be my best for speed and still shoot lights out.

What sort of powder weight to test for N165 shooting 168gr and 180 gr, please? Min and max powder charge? Thanks!

+1, but seems like the 168 guys are branching out to other powders now.

Any updated information on starying loads with N165 amd the 168s? I have been looking but can't find a lot of info.

I have no data with N165, maybe someone here has tried it. When I had my 7 saum, I found these loads to work well.

Using Remington or Norma 7mm SAUM brass.

162 Amax / H4350 @ 59.0grs Max load 2995 fps
162 Amax / H4831 @ 60.5 grs mild load 2850 fps
168 VLD / H4350 @ 58.4grs. Max load 2980 fps

My current load is 180 Hybrids / Retumbo @ 65.9grs 2900 fps.

Thanks trailrider. I tried H4350 with moly 168s in my rifle. Went from 54 to 56 grains. No pressure at all. Velocity ran from 2800 to 2877. I see quite a few people up around 58 or 59 grains of H4350 so I feel I can cautiously advance a little more and see if I can settle in a good node. When I went to resize my brass, I realized how hard they have become. Most of them have 5 reloads on them. Time to send them off to get annealled. I am now fireforming up some Remington brass over the winter so I can keep things moving along with this project.
