Anybody on here using these cartridges for varmint hunting. If so, what bullets are you using and what type of performance are you getting.
I have used the 300 Win Mag on varmints. The 300 Win Mag is a fair bit larger than the 300 WSM,~10%), and I used a 28" barrel. So the velocity was there.
I was not impressed. I used it because it was what I had at the time that would kill what I needed to kill, feral dogs) at very long ranges, over 700 yds).
The lighter bullets are really for about ~600 to ~700yds and very drifty in the wind, and Richard pretty much says the same thing in his DVD.
In 30 cal, if you want to reach out further, you need to go to a bigger bullet, and in 30 caliber, there ain't much bigger that can be considered a varmint bullet.
I had tried the 178 A-Max because the "nice man" at Hornady said it was a thin jacket bullet and would open up - Uh uh... neva happen.
Those 178's would slip through a feral dog and keep on going, and going, and going, and going...
For woodies, if it's important to see them pop up a few feet in the air, then the 300 WSM or the 300 Win Mag will get you the air time, but the price in bullets and powder and noise,,if your farmer friends run cattle or are noise sensitive) will shut you down fast.
I stopped using the 300 WM, and now am putting the finishing touches on a .264 WM Sendero-II, and it will be shooting 95 gr V-Maxs, and they DO come apart like a nuclear bomb.
Richard's comment about only a "custom action" will hold the 300 WSM is pure sillieness - it is the brass head on the case that is the limiting factor of pressure - the Remington 700, or the Winchester M70 will hold the 300 WSM until the brass flows out the vent holes and not even need a breather.
