7mmWSM or 300WSM

Anybody on here using these cartridges for varmint hunting. If so, what bullets are you using and what type of performance are you getting.

Hi. I shoot a 7 wsm on a barrel block rifle. 180 bergers the longest group fired was it 400 yards, three shot @ .650. the bullet impact at longer range is very easy to see. good gun.

This is a video of the .300 WSM with 125 Nosler Ballistic Tips - from Richards Custom Rifles:

http://www.richardscustomrifles.com/300%20WSM%20HOGS.wmv

I haven't taken my .300 WSM out for varmints yet, but in the past have used both a .300 Win mag and a 7mm Rem mag on them - just for fun. Speer's good old .30 cal 130 gr hollowpoint is great, many years ago that was the varmint bullet of choice for those of us who only had a .30-06 for everything. Explosive and accurate.

Nosler's .30 cal 125 Ballistic Tip works well on Varmints. So does the Hornady 110 gr V-Max. Mostly I've shot those bullets from a .308 Winchester.

Have fun! Guy

M700, thanks for the info. Wow, the video you sent was impressive. That looks like an awesome varmint rig too. A 125grn Ballistic tip at 4000fps is impressive.

I saw a debate about this on a site called Long Range Hunting. It was being questioned by some if you could really get the accuracy and velocity out of the 300 WSM. After reading the info on Richards site, I see now how he is getting the velocity and accuracy out of the 300 WSM.

Richard stats that in order to get this type of velocity and performance out of the 300 WSM, the rifle must be fitted with a Nesika or BAT action and a Bartlein 1-15 twist barrel. I don't have the $$$ money to build that kind of rig, however, that would be fun to shoot.

I think I am going to go with the 300WSM. Norma makes excellent brass for it. I don't know what bullets I want to use yet. The 208grn A-Max look very interesting, however, might be a little overkill for varmints within 600 yards. It would be a good bullet for 1000 yard varminting.

I am probably going to need a 1-10 or 1-11 twist barrel for the 208grn A-Max, so I am thinking the smaller bullets like the 110grn V-Max and 125grn BT want work in those twist rates. Who knows, maybe they will. Anyhow, look forward to getting some more info. I already have the action, stock, trigger, ect. I just need to get a barrel now. I think I will go with a Krieger.

Haven't had my .300 WSM very long, and don't know it well yet as a recent shoulder injury has prevented me from even firing it. I think it would make a fun rockchuck & coyote rig, and am sure there are other guys out there using theirs. Admittedly a bit of "overkill." Too bad... I've got a .204 I'll use to rest up my shoulder...

I thought that was a great video from Richards Customs too! :D

I have no doubt the number he is claiming is legit. I am able to get right at 3700 fps with my 300 SAUM with a 22" barrel with a stiff charge af RL 15. Slow the twist-rate and up the powder charge in a longer barrel with tight chamber, and WOW! There are only real hogs around here, but I am planning on using them/carrying them with me when I go deer hunting as they shoot to the same zero as my Barnes hunting load. The 125s are amazingly accurate to boot!

Sewwhat89, what is your twist rate on your barrel.

I have heard the 125grn BT is a really accurate bullet. I have also been told it works pretty well in windy conditions too. I will try this bullet out, however, I don't think it will perform very well in a 1-11 or 1-10 twist rate barrel.

I want to shoot the light bullets too, so I am confused on what twist rate I should go with. I will only be shooting out to around 600 yards for all my varminting in 2008. Maybe, I should get a slow twist barrel and shoot the lighter bullets for the 2008 varmint season. I need to make up my mind soon, because it takes about 3 months for Krieger to complete the barrel.

Anyhow, thanks for the info about the 125grn BT and letting me know about the velocity capabilities too.

Its a 1:10 twist barrel. I even have a couple 106 gr custom bullets I got last year that shoot even better. One of the groups was in the low 0.2s for five shots at 100 yards; however, I have a very limited supply of those bullets and they are moly coated.

The left hole is the first two shots, and the right hole is the last three shots. The last three are a 0.098" group, actual hole size not .308 but 0.297 by my eyes).

I am going to tell you the secret to bullet success. 7mm WSM vs. .300 WSM the .300 WSM will always win. Now you wanna' hear something even funnier? A... .700 WSM,It doesn't exist but just a small sample) vs. a 7.62mm WSM the .700 WSM will win just because of one thing. Metric system. The metric system when it comes to bullets will never ever come to life. The most common small-arms are .243. 30-30, .308, .30-06, .270 WIN. All of these were at sometime or another, excluding 30-30) were in the military at some time, and they were never in metric system. Think of a popular non-target oriented rifle that has a metric name. a 7.62mm WSM vs. 300 WSM a 300 WSM would win, but it's the same bullet. So the problem you face is that if you decide to get the 7mm WSM you will not find bullets for it. Also a .300 WSM is an incredible cartridge, it is definately better than the 7mm WSM for the fact that it is barely less flatter shooting that it, but hits a lot harder than the 7mm WSM.

yo bench4fun when was the 243 and the 270 used by the military? a 243 IS a 6mm. as far as a popular metric carttridge how about all the 7 rem mags out there. how long is the barrel life of a 300 wsm with 125 at 4000fps,still impressive though. cliff

And just why would he not be able to find bullets for the 7 WSM?
The're all kind of Varmint 7mm bullets on the market. Wher are you getting your info from? Have you looked at any bullet catalogs lately or visited any web-sites of vendors? You need to get your facts straight before you put that kind of info on forums. Bill

7x57 6.5x55 there are many popular metric sized cartridges the world over. bench4fun other countries have shooting competitions also and many of the metric calibers are very popular. And contrary to popular belief some of these foreigners are damn fine shots.

This isn't mean't to be deragatory but posts like yours are usually flamed pretty hard on this board.

Well, in this case jb77 I am not trying to be a butt but what he is saying is wrong and most guys on here know that but what about a newbie that does not know better? Bill

Folks-

We were all noobs at one time. No crime in that. Did I give silly advice or make outlandish statements back when I knew "just enough to be dangerous"? Heck yes. In another thread, Bench4fun stated he wanted to get into benchrest shooting and asked what kind of a gun he could get built for $50,000. While his statement about metric bullets etc is certainly way off-base, he's trying to contribute the best he knows how.

Bench4fun-

Welcome to the board. You've found some of the most knowledgeable shooters to be found anywhere right on this forum. Listen what they have to say. Also, be sure to read the many, many articles available on this website. You'll learn more here in a week than in a whole lifetime of reading 'Guns & Ammo'. Be a sponge and ask LOTS of questions.

Tom

Bill I couldn't agree more.

Tommie, since I was trying to use some constraint in my reply to bench4fun and impart some advice, let me explain myself to you. I think we owe it to each other to at least know what the hell we are talking about before we open our mouths.

Yes there is room here for all kinds of opinions but they need to at least be grounded in reality. If I wanted to waste my time sorting through crap there are other sites I could go to.

Don't you think we are all somewhat responsible to each other for what we post here. I want to read informed opinions and answers that have some value, not crap.

I see your point Tommie and I don't want to hurt anybodys feeling
but we need to make sure when we make a statement that it is going to hold water so to speak. New people come to the site and are looking for help. Not fluff. Bill

billmo and jb77,

I agree with everything you're saying. It's obvious to us that Bench4fun is very, very green. Several other of his posts are equally "misinformed". I honestly don't think Bench4fun realizes how wacky his statements are. After I posted above, I PM'ed Bench4fun and explained why his statements are being disputed. I also suggested he spend some time here in the student mode and get some seat time in before attempting mentoring. Hopefully, he'll take the advice.

There's been a general increased level of flaming recently and I was just trying to cool things off a bit.

Cool?

Tom

edit: And by the way, if he does continue with the Gomer comments I'll be the first one to fan the flames.

????????

Aw, never mind - I promised the Moderator I would behave!

But I gotta ask... how did the shooting world get along before this "secret" was let loose?

I don't need to say it, all of you know what the problem here is ;) ;) ;)

Yea, I agree he needs to sit back and watch the movie, eat his popcorn and save his instructions and advice til he has some. Bill.

Damn that sounds almost like a "cat meow" to me.

Hey Cliffe...

DUDE, didn't you know that the 243 was first used in the Somalian military belt fed machine gun? Then some creep stole the case and said that the Americans invented it.

And the 270 was first developed by the French, for the Chau Chat French WWI Machine Gun.

It was going to be the official round for the gun, until the French discovered the ballistacally more superior 8mm Lebel round.

Then some gun writer discovered a box of 270 rounds in an old WWI surplus kit, and stole the rounds and took them to Winchester, and the rest is history.

I mean, common, get your history straight... OK??

;)
