7mmRemington Magnum

I have a customers Remington Sendero in for a tune up and load development.

I glassed in the lug, recrowned the muzzle, cleaned the barrel with both a carbon and copper remover. The bore scope revealed a pretty good barrel for a factory barrel. The throat measured 2.695 from the case head. The factory trigger was adjusted down to 1.pound without any creep or overtravel.

My first,5) loads were 65.5 grains of H-4831SC Federal 215GMM and Nosler 140 balistic tips the first five shot group was in the .7s at 100 yds. I had a little primer cratering but not bad.

My second,5) were with 65.grains H-4831SC Federal 215GMM seated 2.685 and the group was in the .6s at 100yds.

With fire formed brass my third and fourth groups were in the .3s

Today I will try 65.grains of H4831SC and seating 2.695 and 2.705 seating depth. I had no vertical in my groups all were 9-3 o'clock groups.

I cleaned the barrel with both a carbon cleaner and a copper cleaner. The barrel was much less fouled than expected.

The rifle owner had been shooting Winchester combined technology 140s and Federal Premiums 140s and his best groups were 1.5 inches or better.

My goal is to develop a sub .5 controlled expansion load. I will switch to Accubonds since the shoot very much like the Balistic tips.

Your thoughts and suggestions are welcme.

I have also found that in a 7mm Mag that I had that fired cases, even FL sized shot very much tighter groups than new cases. I got the rifle new Rem. 700 SS. I bought 100 new cases and started working on a load. I just kept using the new cases and could not get that rifle to shoot under 1 1/2 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards. I had free floated the barrel bedded it tuned trigger etc. I was about to chalk it up to a lemon. They I loaded up some once fired cases that had been FL sized with the most accurate load that I had come up with at that time. The first three shot went into the same hole. I found that with that rifle you could just about fill the case to the top with AA-3100 and cram any bullet in the case and the rifle would shout under 1/2'. I got rid of that rifle because I kept shooting deer perfectly through the front shoulders and they would run off around a 100 yards or so into the thick cut over brush where I hunted and you had a heck of a time finding them and getting them out. I traded even up for a Rem 700 SS in 25-06 and never had a deer even take a step after being hit. Go figure.
