7mm WSM, long or short

My buddy wants to build a 7WSM for long range hunting. Since neither one of us have ever messed with the WSMs, we are looking for advice regarding the action. I have seen a few that didn't feed worth beans and a couple that seemed to feed fine (all factory rifles). Biggest question I have is whether it is better to build on a short action or long action to accommodate shooting 168, 175 and 180 VLD type bullets?

Any suggestions on a repeating action that feeds the short mags good and has enough mag box to seat the bullets where they should be?

Im having a long action badger trigger guard and mag inletted into my 300wsm long range hunter right now.

I chose the long action just so I wouldnt have to jam bullet into case when using long bergers.

Gunsmith and I looked at the .300wm magazine, and the 338 magazine from badger. The .338 has two small lips at the top that catch a short mag round early and push up the round. It felt like it would feed fine.

Ill have the gun back next week and we'll see which mag the gunsmith went with.

If you haven't read it - here's a great article right here on this forum about a short-action 7mm WSM on a short 700 action. Good stuff:

There's a few more articles on great 7mm WSM's in the Gun of the Week area as well, but this one was on hunting rifles.

I built a 25/300 WSM on a Rem 700 Long action, and I'm glad I did I shoot the 115gr Berger VLDs just touching the lands and it barely ejects a live round outta the long action. Hope this helps ya out some. Good luck with your build

Yes, I read the two in there with the 7WSM. I built my 6.5-284 on a long action so I could seat out as far as I wanted. Just wondering on the WSMs what is common these days. I think we really need a 3" action!

After looking around, I really wanted a Borden Rimrock but he is 6 months out on CM actions. I don't want to wait that long. I will most likely order a Surgeon 591 this week unless I trip over something else. They actually have them in stock!
