7mm WBY Mag

My son has a custom 7mm WBY that we are experiencing difficulty with developing an accurate/precision load. 26" hart, 9 twist, Stiller action, pillar bedded, McMillian sporter stock. The rifle has no freebore constraints. We have tried H1000 with Berger 180H, 180 VLD and 168 VLD without consistent performance. We have loaded from 0.01- 0. 03 off lands to test form pattern. Any suggestions from experienced WBY shooters or 7 mm rem that may be applicable is appreciated.

I have two that I am shooting but both have the weatherby standard free bore. One has a 30" shillen barrel with a 1 in 9 twist shoots good with 180 hybrids and 68 grains of h-1000 its a fairly light load but good accuracy and brass life. The other is a factory accumark barrel shooting the same bullet but likes 72 grains of h-1000 with a lot of jump

Obviously his rifle does not like H1000 powder. Try something else. Retumbo, MagPro, IMR 7828, RL-22, RL-25, RL-17 or any other powder good for heavy bullets...

Are you using good Magnum primers?

Like Ledd Slinger said there are a lot of new powders out there! IMR-7828 SSC and IMR-7977. Wish I had them years ago for the big case.

I hate Berger bullets, so that is not in the conversation. I would try a different bullet and Re33 powder. My Rem mags shoot 1/2 minute with 175 Partitions and Hornady Interlocks with it.

I believe the OP is looking to use a long range high BC bullet. Hence the testing with Berger bullets. Partitions and Interlocks can't compare to Berger in that department.

Not every day you hear someone say they "hate Berger bullets". What have you tested them in and to what extent to come to that conclusion?

I have NEVER had trouble getting Berger bullets to ultimately shoot under 1/2 MOA in any rifle I have tried them with. I'm sure many other's can attest to having the same experience with Berger.

Mine is a customized 700 Rem. with #6 Lilja barrel and a Winchester Marksman McMillan stock. Barrel is also a 9 twist finished at 26 + a break. Jewell trigger.

This is a hunting rifle. It is a no freebore 7mm Weatherby. I shoot 160 Accubonds 10 off with 74 grns. of Retumbo, 215 primer at 3050 fps. It is a 10 lb rifle with the scope(5-20 Huskemaw if it matters). This gun will shoot 2.5" is best at 600, but average group size (3 shot) is 3.5" to 4" at 600. I haven't shot it any farther.

I have some 150 and 168 LR Accubonds to try prior to hunting season. This gun has been to Canada 3-4 times and it kills big deer very well.

Ive tried 7828, Retumbo, H1000, H4831 and keep coming back to Retumbo. I hope this helps. I would back this load off to start. The Sierra book has data on this cartridge with Retumbo.

Like I said this is a hunting rifle. I've never tried the Bergers for hunting.

I believe the OP is looking to use a long range high BC bullet. Hence the testing with Berger bullets. Partitions and Interlocks can't compare to Berger in that department.

I still would recommend the Re 33 powder, since he is not having luck with the other.

I have tried Bergers in .308 and 6mm. I did not feel like burning the amount of powder that I felt it would take to get them to quit looking like a shotgun pattern on the target. Secondly, I think hunting with a target bullet is crap. I am not a target shooter, so I am going to stick with the bullets that shoot well in my guns and are designed for hunting.

I have tried Bergers in 6mm and .308. I decided that I did not want to burn the amount of powder it would have taken to get them to quit shooting shotgun patterns. Secondly, I won't shoot target bullets at big game. I am not a target shooter, so I will stick with bullets that shoot well in my guns and that are made for performance on game animals.

+1 on Retumbo or maybe IMR 7828 sc but definitely try Retumbo first.

Thanks for all your input. We used F215 Mag match primers. Will try the Retumbo again. The pound I purchased has grains clinging together which may mean it is old. Also will try 160 Accubonds.

I Would also recommend doing a ladder test with what ever combination of components you have you will find a load a lot quicker and not burn out your barrel chasing a load. if you are not sure research ladder test on this forum it is very useful.
