7mm VS 6.5mm

You've heard the saying, "there is no pill smaller than the 7mm with better ballistics". Does this still ring true today? I lean towards a crutch, so a Round that can hit 1200 in the wind can help me hit anything. I'm not a competitive shooter, but you guy's are up on the newer Pills and Ballistics. Nothing too big please, if a 47mm can't push it, no need to mention it.

Limiting that argument to nothing bigger than 47mm kind of cuts off what 7's - at least those on the mid- to higher end of the weights available - can bring to the party.

The larger cases can drive 7's fast enough to best pretty much anything using 6 or 6.5mm, why they're popular among F-Open competitors.

Larger case volume has a price though in higher recoil, which throws an advantage to the mid-volume cases up to 47mm for PRS-style shooting where there's enough case capacity to do the job yet not beat you up in the course of an afternoon.

Traditional (jacketed) bullet design's come a long way these past five or six years. There are 6's & 6.5's now that challenge what 7's used to have a lock on. Maybe with that 47mm limit they'd be a better choice?

Warner's new Flat Line (solid) Projectiles are new to the scene but I don't think their one 7mm - a 151 grain - can be driven by a case with your size limitation to match what a few 6 or 6.5's could do.

Life is compromise, as is picking the cartridge you choose to do a particular job.

By Larger Cases do you mean Rem Mag 61k? The Lapua 47mm is rated @ 63k, doesn't that make a difference? I thought the 47mm had the Rem Magnum covered.

Pressure does not equate to speed, you need boiler room for the powder. More powder = more fuel to burn to push the projectile faster.

The 7x47mm Lapua was able to drive 168gr bullets at up to 2810fps in a 30in barrel i read somewhere. It was in the bulletin. One lf those popular barrel cutting articles i think.

280 Rem can easily drive a 180gr Hybrid at 2,920fps and QL is predicting around 57k psi with a 30" tube. Not sure why you would want to run at 63kpsi and get less velocity.

As with everything more detail is better. Hit 1200? what does that mean, put a mark on steel, hole in paper or stone a moose? After two years of competing with 180g bergers out of a 7WMS at 1K I'm switching to 6mm. No matter the wind a 105 grain 6mm out of dasher shot better. It's not the equipment as much as its the shooter.

280 or 280AI with 180 at 2920?
