7MM South African cartridge

What cartridge and load did the South African team use at the 2005 F-class world championships?

7mm Tombi. Based on a slightly shortened and improved 30-06 case, capacity close to that of the straight .284 Winchester,Tombi is 62 grains of water when filled to the base of the shoulder).

I don't think it was the cartridge that ultimately made the difference in performance though, even if the 7mm bullet was supposedly a little more resistant to vertical drifts). Miss a wind change, and you too will shoot 6s, 7s, and 8s out the side.

Re: load data. Bullets were Bergers. Not sure about other components - don't forget that South Africa has a domestic capacity to produce small arms components,SOCHEM propellants, Denel brass), so even if you had the data, you might not be able to replicate the load.

Thanks for all you responses re: the South African F-class cartridge.
If the cartridge is the size of the 284 win. their probably pushing the 168 gr. Berger's to 2900-3000fps.

Not a huge advantage over the 6.5-284. My guess is they won due to home field advantage vs a superior cartridge.

Paging through the old posts, reading this one on SA equipment for 2005 world cup. I'm a South African, I shot at the particular world cup, with the same equipment that team used to win. You're right, it is an improved version of the 30-06 case, more or less the capacity of the .284 case.

Neck is much longer than the .284 though, barrel life, for those whom it matters) better than .284. Velocity with local propellant, comparable with your 4831sc)is easy 3000fps with 175gr SMK or 180gr Berger, some go to 3100, but that's on the edge. Usually shoots around 2950 with some margin to spare.
