7mm saum in a longer action

Yeah, I know it sounds stupid, but how would i go about getting/making a gun chambered for the 7mm SAUM cartridge with a longer action?

I absolutely love the 7mm SAUM and I think it has the best of everything, high BC, reasonable kick, high speeds with the 160-180grain weights) except I do not like the cycling action and limited space of short actions. So how would you go about getting a longer action converted over to a 7mm SAUM? I know I can go extreme and get a 7mm rem ultra mag and put a 7mm saum barell on it, but the ultra mags have too long of an action for my taste. I would love a .270 action length or even a 300 win mag action length for my tastes.

The main reason i want a longer action is that it has more 'room' in the magazine for some of the higher BC bullets like Berger, Sierra, etc. Those high B.C. bullets are really long, and to fit in a short action magazine, they have to be seated way down into the case which either compacts your load or decreases powder capacity.

For instance, right now I own a remington 700 chambered in 7mm SAUM. The longest possible bullet I can make that will fit in the magazine of that gun is 2.830 inches. That has the berger 180s seated WAY down in the case. If i can get a longer action, I have more play room.

What would you do?

Remington only builds two lenghs of 700's short and long. I had a 300SAUM that was built on a long action that started out its life as a 30/06 I had the bolt face opened up and the magizine opening widened. It worked just fine. If I was building one from scratch I would start with one of the 700 clone actions built by Surgeon they can be had for $650-$700

Nothing stupid about that at all, hunt up a old long action 700 and have right at it.
A 25/06 on up will work fine and a 7mm or 300 magnum will not need the bolt opened up... you will need the 7saum follower either way.....

I plan to do the same thing. The extra length in the action will allow 'proper' seating which equals more powder space. I have been wanting the 7 SAUM but not in a short action.

I was just about ready to ask a similar question when I read the post. My question was slightly different however. I was thinking that since the 300 and 7 rsaum's are built on a shortened version of the remington ultra mags, with longer COAL the saum's and wsm's would end up feeding better in an ultra mag action. I have a 300 rsaum right now and I am trying to maximize it's abilities with a nosler 200 accubond. I have been debating to go back to the 300 win mag but I like what the saum and wsm's can do with less powder. What are your thoughts folks? Also if feeding was not an issue, what is the best COAL for the .300 saum using 200 gr accubond or any other high BC bullet?

Thanks

I just finally got it all fig`ered out. I built my 7saum on a 700la and had troubles w/ feeding from the get go. It was a 7rm before and what I found out was no mater what you do, you got to get a dremel tool and cut about 20thou off the sides of the feed ramp. After that you can order a rum mag box from midway for about 20 bucks a you in business. I got a suam follower on order too but I don`t need it. My 7 now feeds like a champ... Hope that helps.

I've seen that the Kwik-klip mag system from Cabelas works very well feeding the short action rounds in a long action.

It's major benefit is that it is a centerfeed system.

I built my 6.5 SAUM on a long action and I've got a long action prepared for a 7 saum. However, I'm having second thoughts on the 7 saum. I have a 33" 1.25" diameter barrel for it and I"m thinking the SA single shot action is stiffer. Since I'm single shot feeding, who cares about the length of the bullet.

For mag feed, go LA to get the potential out of the cartridge.

Carslsbad , you’re only a decade late to this thread but I’ll say the Tikka action lends itself to making a great short mag. You have to modify the bolt stop and magazine but they work great.

My 6.5 saum is built on a browning abolt shortmag it wont feed so I made a single shot follower to fit the mag and all is good.
