7mm remington pet loads 140-180 grain

I just had my 700 Remington re barreled with a Broughton 7mm Remington Mag 1 in9 twist 26'. I have never owned a 7mm Rem mag before. I am looking for some pet loads to start with in the 130gr to 175gr. I will be shooting from 100yds to 600yds.

I am a 7mm fan also. I have the same rifle with the factory barrel. I have a few loads that shoot well. I use Sierra and Hornady bullets only, not that others are not as good, I just prefer them. The Sierra 140 grs. shoot well with Fed 215mag primers and 71.6 grs. of Retumbo aprox 3000fps in Rem cases. It normally keeps five in a nickle at 100yds. 175 gr Hornady's shoot 5 in a just a little over a dime at 2720fps chronied with IMR4831 60.8 grs and CCI250 mag primers Rem cases. Every rifle has it's own peeve's.

74.5gr MRP under a 140gr TTSX gives me 3150fps and tight groups.

63.1 gr RL 19 168gr SMK is right at 2950 with bug holes.

65-66gr RL 19 with 140s is another great load for me.

A stiff load of IMR 4831 with 145gr Speer BTs also shoots great.

I run 66.3gr IMR7828 and a 160 Accubond. 2975 fps out of my 24' barrel with groups averaging just over .5' from my factory tube. I get about 20.75 moa drop from 200 to 1000.

My freakishly accurate Sendero likes H4831SC and a 162gr Amax. This load is warm at 65.5gr in my gun so procceed with caution.
Norma Brass and 210M primers.

This bullet has performed flawlessly at all distances and on a wide veriaty of game. From Prarie dogs to Coyotes to Mule deer.

Good luck.

160 Sierra SPBT, 65 gr RL-22, Win case, Fed 215 match primer. Easily over 3,000 fps with excellent accuracy and great results on game.

The same weight Nosler Partition bullet can be used if deeper penetration is required.

Also... Sierra and Nosler 175's perform very well when loaded for roughly 2900 fps.

150gr NBT's pushed buy IMR 4831 has always shot well in most 7mm mags I've loaded for, start at 62.0 grains which should chrono just over 3000 fps out of a 24' barrel. Nosler's #4 guide list 66.0grs as max. I've always found best accuracy near the bottom with this load using Fed 215 match primers.

Good luck

Some folks will tell you a 7mm Rem mag isn't enough gun for elk... Rubbish! :) This bull taken with a single 175 Nosler Partition with complete penetration through the boiler room at about 180 yards:

That load was 2930 fps from a 24' factory barrel, with the old H870 powder which is no longer made. I've been working towards a replacement for several years off and on. Believe Retumbo is going to do it for me.

120gr Sierra Pro Hunter with min. charge of IMR 4064 or IMR 4350 @ 3000fps for a reduced recoil load.

120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip with lots of R22 @ 3350-3550fps. Very accurate, but these did not expand in coyote. Exit hole as big as entry hole. Coyote died instantly nonetheless. Try the V-Max 120gr for expansion. If you want a flat shooting deer round, then the Nosler BT should work.

139gr Hornady SST with lots of R22 @ 3150fps. Really like the SST for hunting in 270 Win, 7mm Mag and 308 Win. SST is very accurate.

162gr Hornady Interlock with 70gr of R25,MAX LOAD). Shoulder hurts: yours and the animal's. R22 might be better.

168gr Sierra MK with 68.5gr R25,MAX LOAD). Never got these to shoot as well as other combos, but I found the max. I did 69gr and 69.5gr and accuracy got worse, and shoulder hurt more. Brass and primer didn't look too bad.

Win brass. I prep these as much as my match .223, but not weight sorted.

215M primer. But also moved to CCI 250 since Federal so hard to find. CCI primer was harder to pop than the Fed. So I took my rifle to 'smith and he fixed the issue.

My hunting load is
180VLD on 68g of Retumbo lit by 215M in fed or WW brass. .010 off the lands. Routine for 1-1.5' at 300 yards

168 VLD 64g of RL22 same brass and same primers but .080 off the lands!!

FWIW I've never had a load that shot well jammed in the lands. By jammed i mean .010 into the lands. Also I find my gun shoots better just under 3000 fps. I can run it faster, not with the 180's) but accuracy suffers a bit. I'm not taking full advantage of the magnum cartridge but it works.

Re: 7mm remington pet loads 130-160gr

I bought a used savage 7 mag 24" sporter barrel for $235.00
added scope.
loaded 140 ballistic tip 68.0 gr RL22 shot a .187 3 shot group @ 100.

Re: 7mm remington pet loads 130-160gr

70 gr. Reloader 25/Fed. 215/Nosler cases/Barnes 150 gr. TSX - 3100 fps. w/ 24" bbl.
Shoots into 1/2 moa as far as I can. Complete penetration on elk @ 310 yds.. Knocks boars down very well.

Re: 7mm remington pet loads 130-160gr

has anyone killed elk with the Berger 168 hunting bullet? My hunting buddy has a data point on one moose- one shoot kill at 503yds. He did not hit any bones except a rib on pass thru- dropped in its tracks. The guide couldn.t believe what he saw. The last moose I shot at 80yds with a .338 went a 100 with a heart shot. I've heard of mixed results but not info as forensics on the shot. The rifle was a 7mm rem mag loaded with the 168 Berger and H1000.

Re: 7mm remington pet loads 130-160gr

I haven't had that opportunity yet. Have killed three mule deer with the little 115 gr Berger VLD from my .25-06 @ 3200 fps mv - results were dynamic to say the least.

A couple of my shooting buddies have told me about taking elk with the .30 cal/210 gr Berger VLD's with good results.

I've done some shooting with the 168's from my 7mm Rem mag - but haven't taken game with that combo yet. Was looking at it as more of a long-range mule deer setup...

Re: 7mm remington pet loads 130-160gr

How about some pet loads on the heavier bullets 162gr to 180gr bullet?

Thank you all that responded. I will give them all a try. If anyone else has any loads the would like too add it would be appreciated. Thanks

168 Vld's work great on elk. Pet load is 71.5 grains of retumbo fed 215 primers in Win brass. I have shot this load in a couple of different 7mm Rem mags and velocity runs between 3080 and 3100. 180 vld's shoot great in the 7 mag as well. Load for the 180's is the same except start at 68-69 grains Retumbo

I would like to thank all of you that took time to share your time and information with all of us that shoot the 7mm Remington Magnun's
