7mm Rem SAUM

I'm still fishing for my first target rifle project. Found a beautiful 700 BDL SS in 7SAUM. Price is right for the first phase of this project. I have no problem necking down the readily available 300 SAUM brass. The synthetic stock is pefect for the project since I'll just use it as a template for making my own heavier BR stock anyway. The SS barrel is a hunting contour,bummer)so I'll have to go easy on long P-dog sessions until I can afford a custom barrel.

Now for the real question. Am I being completely shortsighted getting a SAUM action if my future plans are to convert this to a single shot 6 or 6.5 long range heavy varmint rig down the road? I guess this means another bolt eventually, doesn't it?

I fell in love with this gun the second I handled it. I walked into the gun shop looking for a Savage 12 OR a Rem 700 to base this project gun on. I have never shot a Rem 700 but I own another Savage 12.

Yes, you will have to get another bolt. Then you will be able to shoot two kinds of cases and have a switch barrel!!!!!!

Needing another bolt depends on the chambering you go to. If you go to a 6 or 6.5 WSSM or .264 Win Mag, the current bolt is going to work fine. If you go with a different sized case base - e.g. a .308 deriviative like a .243 or .260, then yes you'll need a new bolt.

After you get to shooting that 7mmsaum you just may change your mind about a different barrel.
Why bother with 300 brass when 7 is still available but a bit pricy ... sure glad I stocked up, hard to cough up $50.00 + 100 unless it's Lapua :,

You can keep the same action and go to a 6 or a 6.5, they make reamers for both a 6/300SAUM and a 6.5/300SAUM . I fixing to start a build on a 6.5 now . So you can get the 7 and shoot it to see if you like it and if you dont you can go to the others later .
