7mm rem mag

has a 7mm rem mag ever been necked down to a 6mm rem mag? and also what does it take to change 7mm rem mag down to 6.5 rem mag? barrel change and brass reworked?

you need to contact RCBS they make dies to reform cases like you need.
but you can buy what you want at midwayusa.com
6.5 rem mag cases $77.00 per 100 cases.
I just bought some 2 weeks ago.
Or buy once fired 6.5 rem mag cases.
Or you can just neck down the 7 mag to 6.5 and you have the 264 win mag cases

i was just thinking about the future if i ever need to get another barrel for my 7mm rem mag if it'd be possible to get a 6mm and make a 6mm-7mm rem mag. damn that would be wicked.

The 6.5 rem mag is already a commercial cartridge -- 264 Winchester Magnum. I have two, and they are barrel burners. A 6mm would be brutal on barrels.

Just how many barrels have you burned out?
the 264 is no worse that the 7 mag it is the same case only .020 larger neck and the 6.5 rem mag is the same size case as the 30-06 who burns out 30-06's?
I have a 6.5 rem mag and 2 264's been shooting them for several years no problems.
But I do agree with you on the 6mm-7mag.

i was just thinking. i 6mm bullet being fired out of a 7mm rem mag cartridge. not the 6.5mm. i think i screwed up when i typed it it. just the 6mm-7mm rem mag idea is what i was thinking. whoops

-------

Two barrels burned out, and about 100 rounds into burning out a third one. Don't have real good records but they each lasted about 800-900 rounds. One started to keyhole the bullets, and the other one had groups open up from close to 1" to 3". I guess still good enough for big game, but a little frustrating at the range.

One formula I have estimates accurate barrel life. I ran the calculation for the 338 WM family of cases, as well as a 6 mm version, and a 30-06 for comparison. Here is what I got:

338 WM - 1760
300 WM - 1230
7mm RM - 1150
264 WM - 810
6mm RM - 550
30-06 - 1920

I think the pattern is that as you decrease bore and keep case size the same, you put the same fire down a smaller hole and accelerate the burning effect.

You may be right with your numbers.
But The only barrel I have used up was a 25-06 it started key
holing but it took my 25 years to do it and this was the only rifle I had for that time and it was used when I bought it.
