7mm rem mag reloads seem slow

hi guys. i am a new reloder and have been working on a load for my 7mm rem mag. i did all the nesisery research and worked up to max charge i am getting exalent accuracy with 67.5gr of h1000 and SMK 168's.
i took a trip to my range today and got some velocities and was realy disapointed... 2666fps! SD of 25 fps am i being un-relistic or is this realy slow for this volume of powder?
for a compareson i chronographed my 150gr fedral. wich is published to be 3025 fps but i was only getting 2825.

will velocities creep up as the rifle wears in? im not seing any pressure signs but would preferr idealy not to go too far over book maxes.

thanks
john

In my experience with this cartridge, you will be better served with H4831SC, RL-22 or IMR 7828. For the 168 Class bullets, H1000 will work, however, as you see it is a might slow burning. If you went to the 175+ class bullets, then it becomes more desirable.

ah ok thanks. im happy withthe accuracy was just supprised at the velocity.
im not hugly concerned cause it will get me to 1000 yds.
thanks for your help

That seems a bit slow for sure. With the usual powders, my guns easily get 2800+ with 175-grain bullets. That bullet is heavy enough that it should work well with the slow powder. Using Re33, my chrono showed over 3000 fps with a 175 Hornady and Nosler Partition without hitting max. Re 33 also performed very well with 160 Partitions in my 26-inch rifles.

I would first try another chrono if you have access to one. Then, maybe a different powder would be your option.

RL-17 will probably give you the best velocity and you'll be using less powder. I have yet to find a rifle of mine that does not like RL-17 for accuracy as well. Everything I have ever tried RL-17 has been awesome. Including. 6.5x47 Lapua, 300 Win Mag, 6.5 Rem Mag, 260 Rem, 338-375 Ruger, and a few others I can't recall off hand

Try working up to 70 gr, I use that with 168 Bergers and they are going 3050 out of a 25" barrel. Sorry H 1000 powder.

I'm Shooting a 7mm wsm with 66.5gr h1000 and 162amax and getting 2965 FPS average with ES of 10. Is your barrel really short? I know the rem mag has slightly higher case capacity. I think you have probably found the low velocity node for your rifle. I have a buddy that shoots 7mm rem mag 72gr h1000 with 180gr vld with no pressure signs in a stock remington Sendero. The hodgdons website lists 71gr as the max h1000 for 170grain bullets. I think you should be fine advancing your loads a lot! You will likely find at least one more accuracy node with a higher velocity and possibly two.

At 3.29" COAL, this load shows 2772 fps and 50,349 psi at 100.2% fill ratio and 23" bbl in Quickload. You need a faster powder. H4831sc should be the ticket.

Just a thought. It could be a chronograph problem. I've had that one before.

Yup been there too. The one I used to have was about as accurate as a monkey pulling numbers out of a hat.

I'd keep working up in charge. H1000 gave me near 3000 in my 26" barrel at under max also. Book max doesn't mean your rifle max. Keep working. Speed is t everything either. I settled on 2980 av with my 162s

That's actually a very interesting subject and I have heard about this happening a few times. I have a rifle that suddenly went up in speed after a few hundred rounds but with the amount of variables it's such a hard thing to figure out for sure what actually caused it.

Hey thanks folks'
I think what I will do is work up a new batch head in toward the 70 gr or so. I've still got space in the case and half a tub of powder. I'll try a faster powder next time. Also if at all possible I plan on getting some 168 vld but they are like hens teeth. Spoke to brownels here in the UK and they say they often have ten thousand go before lunch after a delivery. :-\

I must have a tight bbl I get obnoxiously high velocities out of my 7mmWSM with seems like any powder. But lately 3200 with 70grs of H1000 pushing 162gr A-Max . Move over 7mmSTW .

thanks guys. new question... guns shootin awsome all the way from 67.5 h1000 to 70gr h1000 i have two shots touching but always has one just off to the right.. its still around half MOA but its a tad annoying.

What primer are you using? And you might want to try some berger 180 gr.VLD and some IMR-7828 SSC and Fed.215's if you are going to be shooting at 1000 Yards.

Just CCI mag primers. Nothing fancy. Realisticly I will be shooting to 6 or 7 hundred but with the option on 1000. The 180 would need a rebarrel if the stability calculators are to be believed. The 168 bergers would probably be the longest bullet I could stabalise effectavly. But the smk shoots well and are more economic.

Don't know what 160 gr bullets perform like with Retumbo, but with 168 gr and heavier Retumbo works fantastic in the 7 RM. Use Federal 215 primers and 72+ gr Retumbo with 168's. Switched from R22 because of barrel heat issues.
