7mm Rem mag or .300 Winmag?

I want to build an F-class/hunting rifle from my rem 700 7mm rem mag. I was throwing around the idea of switching it over to .300 win mag to take advantage of the heavier bullets. I want to be able to shoot 1000 yrds with it. Is that too much to ask of a .300 win mag? I've never owned a mag before so i'm kinda at a loss.

Thanks
Dave

Palma Man,
The 300 winmag might have too much recoil to shoot on a 1000 x 5, even in a 22 pound gun you fire 130 shots in an F-Class match it is going to hammer you. A typical F-Class gun is too heavy to carry around hunting. Something in a 6 or 6.5 mm would be more practical.

My.02 worth.

Dave the 7mm Rem amg actualy is better balisticaly than the 300Win Mag but dont let the secret out the lighter 7mmBullets with a higher BC than the 30's are easier to shoot. Rebarrel in 7mm Rem Mag as you already have all you need.

7mm Rem mag is great! Or... move to the 7mm WSM to get rid of the belt... Virtually the same ballistics, with a shorter, more modern case design and no belt to deal with. A long-time 7mm Rem mag fan, I've seen some great stuff from the 7mm WSM in the past few years. There is still a great article on a pair of awesome 7mm WSM's built by Chris Matthews, somewhere in the archives of this site.

Stick with 175 and 180 grain bullets at around 2900 fps - and either the 7mm Rem mag or the WSM will shoot to 1000 no problem.

The 7mm mag, either of 'em) is fully capable of taking North American big game at least to the size of big bull elk. A rifle set up for F-class is likely to be a little heavy for a general-purpose hunting rifle, but would do fine for long-range hunting where a fellow doesn't have to carry the rifle much. Do consider the potential recoil - the 7mm has less than the .300, but both are considerably heavier than a typical F-class 6.5-284 rifle.

Hi Dave another option is a 7mm 300 win mag improved or enen just a 7-300Win mag. The reason i say this not for extra velocity it is because you can buy high grade 300 cases from Lapua, RWS or Norma and others where the 7mm Rem Mag brass is harder to get. You can sort Rem brass i have had verry good luck doing it aswell. i would also look at a steeper shoulder and if you caoul get a 7mm\300Wim Mag Improved you would need custom dies but with a 7mm 300 win mag you could use a Redding Type S bushing full length die with a 7mm bushing and the Seating die for the 7mm rem mag should work fine raised in the press slightly.

I have both calibers, but I usually grab the 7MM first especially for long range hunting. A 7MM in either Rem Mag or STW teamed up with JLK 180's is a match made in heaven for 1000 yards.

The .300 Win. Mag. in a walk. How many 1,000 yard Wimbledon Championships has the 7 MM Mag. won??? Bill T.

Since you are asking about 7mm Rem mag and 300 Win mag cartridges, I’m assuming you have a standard length action. I would go with the 7mm WSM cartridge. That way you can set 175 and 180gr target bullets up-to or into the lands and the cartridge will still fit in the magazine. This may be true if you use truncated solids (like barnes X-Bullets) for hunting as well.

You my be able to take advantage of the extra case capacity and get higher velocities. This may or may not be an advantage for 1000yrd but I would think it would and advantage for hunting.

You guys know you're replying to a four year old post right?

I suspect he made his choice, and may have even shot out a few barrels by now...

Hey - I don't mind! I was going to post something similar! ;)
I figure something like the 160gr Accubond would be a smart choice for a long(er) range hunting rifle for deer/sheep/goat sized game with BC similar to 190-200gr bullets in a .300.
I am intrigued by the AI idea - who would you get 7mm Rem Mag improved dies from though?

This is a good thread.... but why are we digging up 4,5,and 6 year old threads and adding posts to them? There are plenty of great up to date threads out there.
ahaaa well I guess I had to add to it too to keep it going ;D

Whens the last time the 300 Win Mag. Won the Leech, Or the Wimbledon? Been a while. 6.5 and 7mm have dominated those two coveted trophies. The top 20 every year in each one of those matches have been predomintatly 6,5mm. Minus Ole John and his 6mm Nuclear AKA plain ole 243.

Kent Reeve is the last one I know of for sure.
