7mm neck bushing size advice-

what neck bushing size for the following set up?

hi, starting reloading for my 7mm remington mag, 25" lilja barrel 1:9 twist custom. i have brand new nosler brass and will use bergers, either 168 -180 hybrid or vld hunting. it seems like pretty common brand name stuff. i was hoping someone out here was also using the nosler brass and bergers. this is a hunting application. i will probably be looking at at least .002 neck tension up to .004. i don't have my dies yet, i am ordering them right now but in order to save time i want to order the neck bushings at the same time. i don't mind ordering a 2 or 3 sizes, but i don't want to order like 7

yes, i do know how to measure to get the proper bushing size but,,,,i don't have the bullets yet so i can't measure, yet i want to place my order now so it all comes at once, saving on shipping and time. thanks for any help.

Do you have mikes you can check the neck thickness with? Double that number, add .284, subtract .002 & .003.

yes, i have a ball mic,,, i did think about that but thought someone out there likely was using same brass bullet combo. i just wanted to get close, if i have to order another bushing after, well, at least i tried.

I load for a 28 Nosler using Nosler brass but I'm skimming the necks to clean them up. I use a .313 bushing for a loaded round diameter of .3155. This is with Berger 168 HVLDs. Check your measurements and see if .314 or .315 could work.

7mm Rem Mag Norma and Nosler brass will measure .311-.312 loaded I would personally run a .309 which will be .002-.003 tension.

yes, that is defintely the best way,,,i think he meant like in my situation, where you don't have your bullets yet so you can't do that. i have plenty of bullets for other calibers just not 7mm.

someone may be thinking "why don't you go buy some bullets locally" there are only 2 stores who may of had a box of the 3 or 4 different bullets i wanted to try. one is sportsman wharehouse but they have been real jerks in the past about any returns and they are way more expensive than other places online. i have been trying to give my business to better merchants online. the other is bass pro but it's like a day trip to get there and back.

in retrospect, i should have tried to buy just one box of one of the bullets at sportsman,,,,but i had already ordered the ones i wanted to experiment with so i am stuck waiting.

so since i am wanting everything as soon as possible,,, i was just asking around. otherwise, i would have to wait for the bullets to show up, which would probably take a week. then of course, i can measure like normal,,,then i order the bushings and have to wait another week. i am just trying to save a week of waiting is all. i used my ball mike on my nosler brass, ball mikes are a smidgeon tricky to use sometimes imo, and i seemed to be getting .0148 to .0153 wall thickness, that is full .001 difference in diameter, but so anyway i was coming up with .314 approx, so i just ordered .312, .311, and .310. now i am kinda sad i didn't order the .309. with my luck, it will probably be the one i need.

anyway, i have already ordered so no need for anyone else to comment except for future people looking for same info. i am surprised there is not a community data sheet for stuff like this somewhere but i couldn't find it.

No, you totally did the right thing, ask someone who has the brass you intend to run and have them measure. I have done that with multiple 7mms. If I were you, as already stated, I would run a .309 but I gave you the measurements of norma and nosler brass loaded neck diameters. You can do what you wish with the information.

I would think because it's a hunting rifle, you'd want it as tight as possible (within reason) because you'll be clearing a live round more often than say a target shooter would. You don't want to risk leaving a bullet behind in the chamber when clearing it. It makes a big mess and a really slow reload!

That is horrible advice. I have NEVER had a bullet stick in the lands when extracting a live round. Do Not jamb bullets on a hunting rifle and this will NEVER be an issue.

Because it never measures out that easily for me. I always end up buying at least 2-3 bushing before I find the one that I like... YMMV...

I have never used anything other than .002 tension because I’ve never had a problem getting well under .5 moa without tinkering with things like neck tension.

i know, right? this was my attempt at only buying 1 but it didn't work out. sigh. i bought 3 cause i didn't want the hassle of wasting time by ordering again.

thanks!

i generally like staying at least .005 off the lands for that reason with hunting rounds. and i agree, i won't go under .002 neck tension,

i don't like to jamb them either. i tried once on my "target" ruger rpr 6.5 cm. i was shocked at how much the pressure increased, i got pressure signs way earlier than normal

Dear rockwind and furball. Please don't miss quote me. I never said a word about jam-b or jump-b.

I did NOT misquote you in anyway. It would be impossible to "leave" a bullet stuck in the lands if they never touch them. More neck tension, specifically too much, can cause a myriad of problems such as horrible ES and SD and poor concentricity. I personally would not go more than .003 neck tension
