7mm Mag rate of twist Question

I'm looking at a used 7mm magnum with a 10" twist barrel, will that stabilize a 180 gr. bullet or do I need a 9" twist. I was told the 7mm shoots fast enough to shoot 180's with a 10 twist but I have questions. thanks

I think a 1-10tw would be a little to slow for the high BC 180's.

What make of rifle? How many rounds fired? EVERY 7RM I've seen fired at the ranges was severely abused. Unless you know the complete history, I'd steer clear. The 10 twist sounds like an oldie, too.

I had a 7mm Blaser Mag built last fall, it's very similar in case capacity to the 7mm Rem Mag and shoots a tick faster. When I was ordering the barrel I talked to Berger and they told me at Rem Mag capable speeds a 1-9tw would likely be fast enough but if I ever wanted to shoot the 195's I'd need a 1-8tw so a 1-8tw is what I went with and I shoot the 180 Bergers 3050 fps.

You definitely need at least a 1-9" twist for the 7mm 180gr bullets.
My 7mm RM w/ 1-9 26" barrel shoots the Berger 180 Hybrids at 2950 fps and holds 1/2 moa out to 1000yds.

I have two 7mm's, first is a tikka with a 9.5 that shoots the 168 vld hunting bullet and second a cooper with a 9 twist that shoots the 180vld hunting bullet, both hold them about 1/2 moa. I would think the 10 twist is a little slow for the 180's.

Thanks for all the input. Looks like a 9" twist is the minimum for 180's. I did see Berger's recommend but know they seem over recommend twist. I shoot a 284 Win. with 9" and shoots 180's fine. but as I thought that looks to be the minimum.
