7mm boo-boo

I have put the tinfoil back on my head and have been contemplating the rig I wish to shoot at the FCWC in Bisley in 2009 and I cannot stop thinking about the 7mm Boo-Boo.,For those unfamiliar with it, it is a necked-down 8X68 Mauser)

These are a pretty popular long range wildcat in the UK that are known for exceptional long range accuracy and a voracious appetite for barrels. The barrel part I can handle... the lack of first-hand commentary I can't. There isn't a great deal of info on the net about this wildcat, but it intrigues the hell out of me.

Is anyone out there using the 7BB and if so, what are you using for loads, brass, bullets etc?

I don't have Tooly's 7 BooBoo, I do have his 7 SHV. SHV is the 404 Jefery's neck down. His web-site is http://www.tooleyrifles.com/index.html I shot the SHV in 1KBR. Did pretty good, but re-chambered to another 7MM cartridge. Not because I did not like it, just wanted to try something else. I have the Neil Jones forming and reloading dies for it if your interested.

Have you thought about the .30 bb? or is your heart set on the 7mm? I use to shoot a .30bb,dont have time any more) and think it is a superb calibre. I used to hate anything in .30 cal especially the .308 which i think is an ugly looking round, and so i bought the .30bb to see what all the fuss was about! of course it turned around my thoughts on the 30s, and now i'll never get rid of it. Mine is built on a 10in bat, 30in kreiger barrel and brake, tooley mbr,and jewel trigger. It has lead added to the stock and weighs approx 35lbs, I used to shoot heavy gun 1000yds with it. If memory serves me correctly I used RWS brass, and shot 185 lapua senars over 73 grns of r25, i never chronoed it but thats what the rifle liked, and there i stayed. I also have a spare .338 yogi barrel which ive yet to play with. The 7mm bb, like you say is popular in the UK and i think that you should have no problem in finding load data, and advice etc, hope this helps and good luck with your quest.
Regards
Kev

Thanks all,

I have actually been contacted by a few folks privately with some excellent information on the 7bb,and 30 too). I was contacted by a fellow that has both the 7 and 7.62 variants and both his BAT-actioned rigs are pushing 40 pounds as well. Being an F-class shooter, I have a 10 kg.,22lbs) weight restriction, so I will have to economize on weight.

One question that has not been answered is where to find RWS 8X68S brass in the US or Canada, where I am). Importation is not an issue as I commercially import a number of firearms related accessories into Canada as part of my business, but finding a source is proving to be challenging.

Unfortunately Dave Tooly's website isn't working, but I have his contact info so I will be speaking with him about a few technical questions I have.

As to the 30 vs 7 debate, I tip it in favor of the 7 due to the velocity and ballistic coefficient advantage in relation to weight. The 180 Berger is hard to beat without getting well over 200 grains in a 30. If I were going to go 30, I would likely save myself all this hassle and go 30-338... :)

Has anyone done the 7mm BooBoo using .375 Ruger Brass? ----- I know there is significant dust on this Thread though I thought it was a good Question.

The 7mm Boo-Boo is made from either 6.5x68 or 8x68 brass. If you used the .375 Ruger case (which is bigger in diameter) you have a different cartridge. The mad experimenters on 24hr campfire necked the Ruger case up and down completely as soon as someone got cases to work with.

Huntington Die Specialties is the importer and distributor for RWS brass in the U.S.

I have used the 308x68RWS version of this case. I don't know if it was the "Boo Boo", I bought the rifle second hand with the dies and brass and this is how the barrel was marked.

The RWS brass is the strongest brass I've ever used. I got 50 fired pieces and 50 virgin pieces with the rifle. I lost count of the firings I used the fired pieces for, and the 50 virgin pieces were still unused when I sold the rifle a couple of years later. It was a hunting rifle, and had been to Africa twice before I got it. It would stack 180 grain Accubonds in a hole @ 2950 fps.

The question I have is what will the 7 BooBoo do that other 7mm beltless magnums won’t. I’d just chamber a 7 Rem UMag and be done with it.

Burn barrels out faster. The barrlemaker's and gunsmith's friend :)

Peter Wilson won the GB F-Class championship with a Boo Boo way back in the very early days of our F-Class league, might even have been year one it's so long ago. Since then, WSMs and SAUMs, even 284s and Shehanes have proven to do the job more than well enough ... and while standards and scores have steadily risen so that winning 1,000 yard scores of that time would be in the bottom half of the results sheets these days.

For a super long range beanfield sporting rifle with limited round counts, maybe. The advantage that the Boo-Boo may have here is RWS brass quality and strength. However, the Boo-Boo's heyday was before the super ultra magnums appeared more recently as far as I can see. (This is after all a very old thread - the OP is asking about the FCWC at Bisley - that was three F-Class Worlds ago way back in 2009.)
