7mm/300 win mag

I am thinking about trying this wildcat for something a little bit different to do some elk hunting with. The 300 win mag case is the longest that I can do in a standard long action, barrel life is not an issue for me. Does anyone have any experience with this wildcat, load data (etc)?

thanks,

I have been using one for several years, it is an outstanding round. I chose the parent case for the same reasons to fit in the Remington 3.7" box. I use the 140 Nosler Accubond and 72 grains of N560 for my latest load. I also use IMR7828

I have a 26" fluted #5 taper Krieger smithed by Dwight Scott, crowned at 26" it is a 10 twist. The recoil is not anything unkind at all, and really a pleasure to shoot. I use Redding 300 Win Mag body die to size the base ever so often and a standard 7 Remington Mag FL die to bump the shoulder. The velocity with 140`s runs right at 3300 to 3350 for the top end higher pressure load. I bought Lapua brass while available, wish I had bought a second box, but for a hunting outfit the 100 should last an awful long time.

Gentlemen,

Correct me if 'm wrong but isn't the 7mm/300 Winchester Magnum ballistically the same as the 7mm Mashburn Magnum?

Michael.

I'm running a 6.5-300 win mag i dubbed the "6.5mm Voodoo" there is also a long thread on LRH about this one: http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f19/6-5mm-voodoo-unveiled-69499/

I really like this cartridge, the performance is very impressive, i'm not aware of any other round that can be shot as comfortably and still produce this level of ballistic performance.

However for elk, i would prefer a heavy 7mm bullet over a heavy 6.5mm bullet simply for more mass on target. Heck i would probably just use a straight 300 win mag if the goal was purely elk, for a mix long range deer and elk rifle, 7mm/300 win mag would move back up to first choice however.

Micheal,
I believe the original Mashburn 7mm was based off the 300 H&H case, however you can use a 300wm case but it isn't quite long enough for a true Mashburn if memory serves me.
Wayne.
