7mm 180gr Hybrid alternative

I have a rifle being built to chamber the 7mm 180gr hybrid; .189 freebore and with a no neck turn neck of .317.

the problem is finding darn bullets. speaking to different vendors, the estimated time is end of july. however, if this is not true, i wanted to get input from here of what alternate bullet would work in its place just so i can shoot it, yet have decent results.

i was thinking the 168gr berger vld or the 150gr lapua scenar-L, both of which I can get a couple hundred right now so when i get my rifle, i can shoot it.

i just want to make sure i wont have issues with seating depth and my freebore.

any suggestions?

thanks. i might hold off until the last minute and hope that 180gr hybrids come into stock. i dont have my rifle for another month or two so i wont be shooting it really until the fall/winter.

if need be, i will use something else.

Try Bob Cauterucio, BCB on this Forum. He makes an excellent 177gr 7mm VLD. He may be able to help you.

You could drive over to Bob's and have your bullets same day if he has them in stock.
He's close to you, in So. San Francisco.

How far are you shooting? if it's 1000 or shorter with the added speed the 168's perform right along side the hybrids there just a little more sensitive to seating depth IMHO.

I have 500 180 Sierra's.
O.K.--The Sierra web site and their technician tell me that you have to have an 8" twist barrel to shoot their 180's. Berger's and JLK"S need a 9"twist. Why-how come? Or is it an error on Sierra's part? Besides, you can't get them either. ;)

I have 2 1:9 barrels, 1 Benchmark and 1 Bartlien. Both shoot the 180 Sierra's.

180 gr Scenar L, since no one has mentioned it.

+1. It shoots every bit as good as the hybrid in my RUM.

If you want to keep the bearing surface of the 180 Scenar "L" out of the neck / shoulder junction, you will need a MINIMUM of a 250 freebore and a .275-.300 would be better. If you develop ANY sort of a doughnut and seat that L-O-N-G shanked bullet with that short freebore >>you will wreck your accuracy.. No doughnut >> no problem>> Doughnut>> BIG problem!

I had my reamer built for 180 Berger VLD and it shoots all three very well. I don't have the print in front of me but I am thinking .063" freebore. COAL is different on all three obviously. This is a hunting rifle and I will shoot the 180 HVLD as it out shot the other two.
